Local Nirvana Fan Seeks Photos and Footage of Band's KCK Concert 30 Years Ago

    2023-10-22

Kansas City, MO. - You can often come across interesting stories from the past on the Local Kansas City History Buffs Facebook group.

Like famous band concerts in the area, for example.

A user posted a fascinating story about Nirvana's performance at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, KS. The concert took place on Thursday, October 21, 1993.

It was the third stop on their In Utero North American Tour, as well as their third and final time performing in the Kansas City area. One of Kurt Cobain's favorite bands, Mudhoney, opened for Nirvana.

According to the user: "At the end of the performance, it is believed that Kurt Cobain smashed his white Phase 4 Univox Hi-Flier, the guitar which appears in the Heart-Shaped Box music video."

Whether that's true or just an urban legend, it's still a cool bit of Nirvana trivia that's associated with the band's epic concert in KCK.

In addition to taking Nirvana fans on a cool walk down memory lane, the user primarily created the Facebook post to seek out help from other fans. Specifically, they would like to learn more about the concert.

    1. Did you attend the concert at Memorial Hall? If so, do you have any stories to share?
    2. Do you know someone who attended the show?
    3. Do you happen to have any photos from the concert?
    4. Finally, do you know of any potential footage that was taken of the performance?

While an audio recording of the show can be found on YouTube, so far no known footage of the concert has ever surfaced. And there don't seem to be that many photos either.

So, if you or someone you know can contribute stories, pictures, or even videos from this legendary performance, many Nirvana fans both here locally in Kansas City, as well as internationally, would be greatly appreciative.
