Brothers and Glencoe natives film new TV show ‘Mr. Throwback’ in Evanston

Filming for the new TV show “Mr. Throwback,” starring NBA superstar Steph Curry, took place last week on Hillside Road in northwest Evanston. The show is set to air in August on Peacock, said writer/producer Matthew Libman.

Libman and his brother and fellow writer/producer Daniel Libman grew up in Glencoe. Matthew went to New Trier High School, and Daniel attended Highland Park High School.

Matthew Libman said they picked Evanston for the shoot because “it’s the perfect American suburb, a beautiful place.” Also, he said, they were fortunate to find “the right house and the right type of neighborhood. The cul-de-sac is so cinematic.” He said the production team looked at almost 50 local houses before finding the right one.

Co-star Adam Pally is also from the area, having spent part of his childhood in Skokie.

According to Variety magazine, the mockumentary involves “a down-on-his-luck memorabilia dealer (Pally) who looks for redemption by reuniting with his sixth-grade teammate, NBA legend Steph Curry.”

Curry was not in Evanston last week but may film in Chicago in the coming weeks, Matthew Libman said.

“The series reunites Pally with [writer/producer David] Caspe and the Libmans,” the trade magazine Variety said. “Pally previously starred in the ABC comedy “Happy Endings,” which was created by Caspe and on which the Libmans were writers. Pally also starred in the YouTube series “Champaign ILL,” which Caspe co-created with the Libmans and Jordan Cahan.”

The Libman brothers’ writing and/or production credits include the TV series “Champaign ILL,” “Black Monday” and “Happy Endings.”

Aside from “Happy Endings,” Pally has appeared in “The Mindy Project,” “Who Invited Charlie” and “Sonic the Hedgehog.”
