(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A beaver was recently rescued after falling into an underground construction site in Evanston.

The Evanston Police Department wrote on Facebook, "On this week's episode of EPD Wild Kingdom, we have Bucky the Beaver!"

The post says, "Bucky, as he was affectionately named by workers, was found in a construction site at the Water Plant by Northwestern."

Bucky was found about 30 feet underground.

Workers first knew something was going on when they saw that wood had been chewed. Then they saw him.

He had apparently fallen into the site and was unable to get out. It was hot down there and there was little water.

He may have been there for a couple days.

Perry Kubala, the city's Animal Warden, says she believes the animal was frightened, confused and maybe relieved when he realized they were trying to get him out of there.

The beaver was caught with a net and lifted from the site in an animal crate.

Video of the beaver's rescue shows the crate being lifted from a large area a couple stories underground.

The beaver spent the night at an animal shelter getting rest, food and water and was taken to be checked out by Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation.

Police said he seemed to be in pretty good shape.
