Want help learning to drive a displaced left turn in Evansville? INDOT has training planned

EVANSVILLE — All of the construction on the Lloyd Expressway will bring with it some new wrinkles for city drivers.

This includes the "displaced left turn," which will be new enough for Evansville, and the state, that the Indiana Department of Transportation is hosting an event to teach people about it.

It's also known as a "continuous flow intersection."

The displaced left turn means all left turns are made in two steps as opposed to one.

A driver will first cross from the center to the opposite side of the roadway to a secondary intersection with a traffic signal. Then the driver will go to the main traffic signal via a special roadway parallel to the mainline.

According to INDOT, the vehicles then make their left turn at the same time as through traffic because they are no longer in conflict with one another.

This will be the chance for drivers to experience what the intersection of Epworth Road and the Lloyd Expressway will be like before it opens in mid-August.

The event will take place from 5-7 p.m. July 23 at Evansville Christian School, 10644 Lincoln Ave. in Newburgh.

"Walk through a large visualization of the intersection and familiarize yourself with this innovative improvement," the news release states. "You can get a closer look at maps of the intersection and watch videos that give a driver’s perspective."

Epworth will be one of four displaced left turn intersections on the Lloyd Expressway after all construction is complete.
