The start of the 2024-25 school year is just around the corner for a lot of local communities, and one of the big tasks before the first day is loading up on supplies a child needs for the classroom.
It can be a big expense, but several companies, churches and organizations are offering school supplies for free locally. Here's a look at ones reported to the Courier & Press.

Free school supplies in Evansville
Salvation Army giveaway
The Salvation Army will host a supply giveaway on Friday, July 19 at its location at 1040 N. Fulton Ave. in Evansville from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Families seeking supplies are asked to bring their children, proof of residency and their back-to-school supply list to receive supplies on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. The event is open to any Vanderburgh or Warrick county residents.
Verizon backpack giveaway
Verizon-authorized retailer Round Room is hosting its 12th annual "School Rocks Backpack Giveaway" event.
The giveaway will take place Sunday, July 28 at 1 p.m. Locations for the event in Evansville are:

- 939 N. Burkhardt Road, Suite C
Hensley Legal Group Backpacks 4 Good giveaway
The Hensley Legal Group will host a drive-through backpack giveaway on Tuesday, July 30 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Lincoln School, 635 Lincoln Ave.
Each student will receive a backpack with a wide-ruled notebook, two colorful pocket folders, No. 2 pencils, a pencil sharpener, pencil pouch, crayons, glue stick, scissors and a water bottle.
Metropolitan Seventh-Day Adventist Church back-to-school giveaway
The Metropolitan Seventh-Day Adventist Church will host a giveaway day on Saturday, Aug. 3, from 10 a.m. to noon at 412 E. Mulberry St. in Evansville. Healthy snacks and refreshments will be served as part of the event.
Indiana Black Expo Evansville Chapter back-to-school rally
The Indiana Black Expo Evansville Chapter will host a back-to-school rally on Saturday, Aug. 3 from noon until 2 p.m.
School supplies will be given away in a drive-through format at 663 W.R. Brown Senior Way in Evansville.
Free back-to-school haircuts at Going Forward Barber & Beauty Salon
Going Forward Barber & Beauty Salon, 1015 E. Riverside Drive, will offer free haircuts through Aug. 1. However, you must make an appointment to get the haircut. You can make an appointment by calling 812-428-2688.
Free haircuts and school supplies at KK's Hair Today
KK's Hair Today, 737 N. Park Drive in Evansville, will host a back-to-school event on Monday, July 22 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The haircuts are on a walk-in basis for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. There will also be a school supply giveaway, and the location is collecting supply donations through July 22.
Back-to-school vaccine event at Vanderburgh County Health Department
The Vanderburgh County Health Department is hosting a Back-to-School Immunization Clinic, sponsored by MDWise, from 2:30 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30, onsite at 420 Mulberry St. There will also be school supplies, food and vendors available.
"Children are eligible to be seen if they have Medicaid, no insurance, and some private insurance," a news release states. "Pre-registration is highly encouraged to reduce wait times."
Pre-registered participants will also be eligible for prize drawings. Registration can be completed online at vanderburghhealth.org. Walk-ins will have to bring vaccine records and insurance information to be seen. For questions, contact the Vanderburgh County Health Department at 812-435-2400, option 1.
Restore Outreach back-to-school event at Delaware Elementary
Restore Outreach will host a back-to-school event at Delaware Elementary School, 700 N. Garvin St. in Evansville, on Saturday, July 20 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
While supplies last, backpacks and school supplies will be available for students in pre-k through 12th grade.
Additionally, a sack lunch will be provided by Junior League of Evansville and Evansville Oasis.
Children must be present with parent or guardian for the event.
Rhythm Church backpack giveaway
Rhythm Church in Evansville will host a back-to-school backpack giveaway at 641 Washington Ave. The event will take place Saturday, July 27 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Backpacks will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
Young & Established Backpack Drive
Young & Established will host a backpack and school supplies giveaway on Saturday, July 27 from noon until 3 p.m. at McGary Middle School, 1535 S. Joyce Ave. in Evansville.
Cornerstone Assembly of God Back-to-School Bash
The Cornerstone Assembly of God church at 3900 Kratzville Road in Evansville will host its Back-to-School Bash on Saturday, Aug. 3 from noon to 2 p.m. Registration begins at 11 a.m. Items will be given out until the supply is exhausted.
There will be school supplies, free food and activities and other giveaways. The child must be present to receive school supplies and be entered in the giveaways.

Henderson County Schools Back to School Readifest
The Henderson County Schools Back to School Readifest is scheduled for Tuesday, July 23 at Jefferson Elementary School from 9 a.m. to noon. The Henderson County Schools Family Resource and Youth Services Centers host the event for students and families.
This year’s Readifest will provide an opportunity for families to connect with community agencies, receive school supplies and register their children for school. A Family Resource and Youth Services Center representative from each school will be present to provide parents, guardians and students with back-to-school assistance and information.

Imagine Hair Design will be doing free back-to-school haircuts for ages 5-17 on Saturday, Aug. 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 8887 High Point Drive, Suite A in Newburgh.
No appointments are needed and haircuts are done on a first-come, first-served basis.
