EVANSVILLE — An investigation is underway after a woman was found dead behind a vacant home in Evansville Thursday afternoon.

Officers were dispatched to the 1000 block of North Fifth Avenue around 4:30 p.m. Thursday in reference to a "suspicious circumstance," according to Sgt. Trudy Day, of the Evansville Police Department.

Once at the scene, officers located the woman, whom police officials have not publicly identified.

"The death is being investigated as suspicious and is an active investigation," Day wrote in a news release. "The cause of death has not been determined at this time. An autopsy will be conducted later (Friday)."

The Vanderburgh County Coroner's Office will release the name of the woman after next of kin have been notified, per agency protocol.
