Happy anniversary to Luke Combs and his wife, Nicole! The couple got married on this day in 2020, with Combs celebrating the milestone date on social media.
“Four years ago today I got to marry the woman of my dreams,” Combs writes on social media. “We have two amazing sons now and an incredible life we’ve built together. [Nicole] you have changed my world for the better in so many ways I can’t even begin to put it in words. I love you! Happy Anniversary!”
The couple got engaged in 2018, and planned an elaborate wedding that didn’t go quite according to plan. After having to cut their guest list significantly, because of the pandemic, their ceremony was almost canceled due to dangerous weather.
“We had to scale the wedding back the week before, change venues, and we actually didn’t pick the new venue until the day of the wedding,” Combs shared with ABC Audio. “So that was very interesting. There was a hurricane that looked like it was gonna come right over top of us, and at about the midnight hour there, it veered off to the end. So it ended up being perfect.”
Although they couldn’t invite everyone they wanted to, the two still found the silver lining amid the challenging circumstances.
“It was smaller than we thought it would be, but it actually ended up being very manageable,” Combs recalled. “We got to have time with everyone that was there, and really enjoy the experience, and it was really special … It’s something that I’ll cherish forever.”
“I didn’t know I was gonna cry that much, but I did,” Combs told Radio.com. “I did. I was like [the] doubled-over crying guy.”
Both Combs and Nicole were understandably disappointed that their wedding didn’t go according to plan, but in hindsight, the Grand Ole Opry member was still in some ways grateful for how their wedding turned out.
“My wedding was gonna be really big, and we had to change venues a week before. We had to cut our guest list by like 70 percent, and it ended up being so awesome,” Combs said. “I think back on it now and we wouldn’t have even gotten to talk to everyone at our wedding if it wasn’t the size that it became.”
At the time, the North Carolina native said he still hoped to give Nicole a big, lavish wedding someday, especially since she spent so much time planning their original ceremony, which never happened.
“My wife worked really, really hard to settle that stuff up,” Combs said. “We did have a wedding planner that she worked with, but [Nicole] was very heavily involved in the entire process. So, we were really looking forward to it being a certain way, and a certain thing. At the end of the day, that ended up not mattering because it was still really beautiful and it was everything that I wanted it to be, but I also want to be able to give her that thing that she spent so much time doing.”
“I enjoy writing that kind of stuff, and it’s something that I feel like I have a little bit of a knack for,” Combs said (via ABC Audio). “I don’t necessarily want to be the love song guy, but I feel like kind of I am right now, which is just kind of where I was and happened to be at the moment.”
“So I don’t really have any control over that. You know, if she wasn’t so great, then this wouldn’t be happening,” he continued with a laugh. “I got her to blame!”
