Local Artist Jenna Olcott’s Painting to be Transformed into Mural at The Springs Restaurant

Local artist Jenna Olcott was commissioned to create a vibrant, colorful painting of a local scene that will be transformed into a mural at the newly named The Springs Restaurant, formerly known as The Mill Inn Restaurant. Owners Chuck and Sonja Duckworth sought a local artist to bring their vision to life. The mural will depict the heydays of Excelsior Springs, with a focal point on The Regent Spring Pagoda, historically situated across the Fishing River from The Elms. The customers desired a piece that feels relaxing and peaceful, infused with lots of color.

Olcott’s journey as an artist began in high school, where her love for painting was ignited. Despite taking a break from her art to focus on family and other responsibilities, she never lost her creative spark. “One day, I just felt the urge to start painting again,” Olcott shared. She began with small projects at home, which eventually led to her involvement in larger community pieces.

Her big break came through a Rotary auction in town, which provided her with the opportunity to showcase her talents. This project was a turning point, confirming her ability to create impactful art. “It felt like a sign that I was on the right path,” she said.

You’re probably familiar with Olcott’s work. She has created numerous pieces for local projects, including murals on the side of Solana and Re/Max buildings. Her well-known “I love where you live” mural has become a beloved part of the downtown landscape.

What sets Olcott apart is her unique approach to commissioned work. She often paints based on old black-and-white photographs, recreating cherished memories for families. “I’ve painted everything from homesteads and family properties to sentimental items like a grandfather’s tractor,” she explained. Each piece is a tribute to the personal histories of those who commission her work.

Adding a playful twist to her art, Olcott hides her initials in every painting. This quirky signature began as a joke but has since become a hallmark of her work. “It’s like a little secret between me and the painting,” she laughed.

Despite her growing reputation, Olcott remains humble about her success. She never actively seeks commissions, relying instead on word of mouth and her social media art page. Her work is a testament to her love for the community and her desire to bring joy and beauty to public spaces.
