The Citizen sat down at one of Knit Ewe Together’s Bring Your Own Craft (BYOC) nights and found a lot more than just a yarn store. Knit Ewe’s owner, Shawna Stombaugh, has created something so warm and welcoming in her store. She also has a true sense of community and collaboration with other business owners.

Located at 114 East Broadway in downtown Excelsior, Stombaugh has been hosting BYOC nights the entire time her store has been open (four and a half years). Citizens can join a craft night on Wednesdays from 1:00-4:00, Thursdays from 5:00-7:00, and Saturdays from 11:00 am-4:00 pm. Although most attendees knit or crochet during the events, all crafters are welcome! Everyone who attends works on their own craft and can enjoy fellowship with fellow crafters. Stombaugh jokingly told the Citizen she has regulars who will stalk her outside the store and knock on the door for her to open so they can come in! There is a true feeling of community among the women crafting inside.

If you are new to knitting and/or crocheting, Knit Ewe has everything you need to get started, including the option for 1:1 help which you can schedule on their website here. In addition to craft nights and 1:1 appointments for help, Stombaugh also welcomes crafters to come in anytime during shop hours to craft in the back of the store. Knit Ewe is closed on Sunday and Monday. They are open from 12:30 pm to 5:00 pm on Tuesday and Wednesday, from 12:30 to 7:00 on Thursday, and from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm on Friday and Saturday.

Knit Ewe is stocked top to bottom with all kinds of yarn, including various hand-dyed yarns, with new shades coming in regularly. Stombaugh even has a section of the store dedicated to local yarn suppliers. In fact, in the spring, one of her suppliers invites Knit Ewe and customers to the farm for a “field trip” to see the sheering of their sheep!

Craft nights and farm field trips aren’t the only things going on with Knit Ewe, though! Stombaugh has a wide range of events for her customers. She shared with the Citizen about a Cardi-Party where everyone works on a cardigan, in October, she hosts a Sweater Knit Along, where everyone works on sweaters. In the Spring Stombaugh hosts a retreat at the Loft at Solana. With 5 bedrooms, they settle in for a relaxing weekend with everything from spa appointments to chair yoga. The retreat goes on sale on Black Friday. She even mentioned crochet classes coming up at the event space in Solana on Saturday mornings. You can find the full calendar of events on Knit Ewes website here.

In addition to all of this, she is participating in the Kansas City Yarn Crawl with other KC area yarn stores, which will take place September 19-22. There will also be trunk shows in the store.

Stombaugh has created something truly priceless in her store. Through every stitch and every gathering, this store has demonstrated the power of community spirit and the joy that comes from working together. In a world that often feels fragmented, let this knitting haven remind you that the threads of human connection can be as strong and enduring as the yarns they craft.
