One of Beaufort’s oldest and most historic homes is on the market and awaiting a buyer with particular taste. The William Johnson House, built way back in 1776 in downtown Beaufort’s Point Neighborhood, is awaiting its next owner.

This is your opportunity to own the home, which is probably the fourth oldest home in Beaufort. While not your textbook "Southern mansion," this house certainly packs a great deal of history.

    The asking price: $2.45 million.

Located on a corner lot at 414 New Street, the 2,556 square foot home sits on its original tabby foundation and faces east, which is unusual for homes in the Point. It's built in typical 18th century style and boasts three formal rooms upstairs and down and four fireplaces.

According to its listing, the house has 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, living room, dining room, entertainment center with 72'' TV and built-in Polk sound system; a kitchen, rear porch with extensive rear brick patio, and a separate ADU. The metal roof was custom designed and installed in 2017.

The William Johnson house also boasts bay windows, an attic, a workshop and two car garage.

Of historic note, the house is also the former home of Robert Smalls’ older daughter, Elizabeth Lydia Smalls (born 1858), and her husband Samuel Bampfield.

Two weeks after their wedding in 1877, they moved into the home and they would welcome eleven children under its roof. Elizabeth served as post master in Beaufort for 9 years and lived to be 101.

This isn't the only historic home for sale in downtown Beaufort. The house made famous in the movie The Prince of Tides has also been for sale recently.
