The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame’s James F. Goldstein SuperFan Gallery has announced that renowned director and lifelong New York Knicks fan Spike Lee will be among its new members.

On October 13, at the Jerry Colangelo Court of Dreams, the Hall of Fame’s SuperFan Celebration will honor not only Lee but also Billy Crystal (Los Angeles Clippers), Alan Horwitz (Philadelphia 76ers SuperFan), and Los Angeles Lakers regular Jack Nicholson, the organization announced.

John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, said in a statement, “These individuals have not only been passionate fans but have also significantly contributed to the rich culture of basketball. Their unwavering dedication to the game and their ability to connect with fans make them truly deserving of this recognition.”

The SuperFan Gallery, according to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, was established in 2018 to honor and celebrate some of the most well-known and devoted NBA basketball fans in history.

Inductees are chosen based on several factors, such as a track record of supporting a specific team or teams, a genuine love for basketball as evidenced by their extensive knowledge and enthusiasm, a well-known and esteemed reputation in the basketball community, and a deep respect and appreciation for the game’s history.

57-year-old director Lee expressed his excitement in a statement, “I knew the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inducted players, coaches, and executives; however, I never knew that could happen for fans to be celebrated in the Hall. It’s been my experience that the best gifts I have received in my life were complete surprises. No inkling, no nuthin’, then BOOM—I got an unexpected phone call out of nowhere. I sincerely thank the Basketball Hall of Fame for this totally unexpected blessing for my love of basketball and my crazy love for the NEW YORK KNICKERBOCKERS!”
