Lackawanna Trail won enough games to land the top seed in the District 2 Class 2A girls basketball tournament, but a late-season slide continued into the playoffs where the Lady Lions were upset in their first game.
Fourth-seeded Holy Cross defeated host Lackawanna Trail, 42-36, in overtime Feb. 22 as part of its surprise championship run.
Lackawanna Trail fought back to force overtime after Holy Cross used a 15-2 second quarter to open a 23-12 halftime lead.
The Lady Lions rallied by holding the Lady Crusaders to one field goal each in the third and fourth quarters, but Holy Cross built a 10-4 advantage in overtime.
Ava Schmidt led Holy Cross with 14 points.
Mackenzie Schirg had 11 of her 16 points after halftime, but she was the only Lackawanna Trail player to score in overtime.
Gretchen Rejrat and Ayla Seigle scored eight points each in the loss.
SEASON RECAP
The Lady Lions finished 15-8 overall with losses in five of their last seven games. They shared the lead halfway through the Lackawanna League Division 4 season, but wound up in a third-place tie at 8-4.
After losing four of their previous five games, the Lady Lions closed out the regular season with a 60-41, home-court victory over Susquehanna Feb. 15.
Lackawanna Trail scored 25 points in the third quarter to stretch a six-point advantage to 47-28.
Schrig hit three 3-pointers while scoring 15 in the quarter and finished with 24 in the game.
Rejrat had eight of her 18 points in the quarter.
In their previous outing, the Lady Lions were tied going into the fourth quarter before falling to division champion Mountain View, 37-31.
All-state center Addison Kilmer had half her 14 points in the fourth quarter for the Lady Eagles.
Schrig led Lackawanna Trail with 10 points.
