The 2024-25 NBA season will mark history in the league as we'll see a father-son duo as active players on the same roster, with LeBron James and Bronny on the Lakers. LeBron's been criticized by many for using nepotism to get his son into the NBA, though Kings legend Mike Bibby weighed in on reporter Scoop B's show to defend LeBron, saying James did exactly what any father in his position would do .

“He did what he was supposed to do. Everybody wants the best for their kids. It’s going to be good to see, but everybody wants the best for their son. I’m glad he got a chance to do it. A lot of people won’t get that chance. It’s going to be good to see.”

There's no arguing with what Bibby said, as every father would maximize opportunities for their children if they could. There are former NBA players' sons everywhere in the league, so to say Bronny is the only one to reach this far with nepotism is just false. But not everybody who averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in their freshman NCAA season gets drafted and given a four-year contract based on pure potential.

LeBron made Bronny's path considerably easier, but it's not fair to say Bronny is in the NBA because LeBron pulled strings to make it happen. His name made him an interesting prospect alone, as Bronny now hopes to find his way in the NBA.

LeBron James Is Proud Of What Bronny Has Achieved

Many people will point to nepotism as the reason Bronny James is entering the NBA, although we've seen former NBA legends' sons get ignored by NBA teams if they didn't have the talent required. Bronny generated interest from teams like the Mavericks , Suns , and Raptors, showing there's belief across teams that Bronny could be a solid player.

LeBron commented on Bronny's game and accomplishments after the NBA Summer League, sharing how proud he is of his son.

“As a family, obviously we’re just proud of the fact that he’s even at this point. It doesn’t matter if he plays well, it doesn’t matter if he doesn’t play well. I mean, he’s 19 years old, so he has so much room to grow. He has so much more to learn, but the best thing, he just keeps his head down and just stays focused. So the best will continue to come as he continues to work and continues to get better and better.”

In a more recent interview on his own platform 'The Shop,' James candidly discussed how surreal playing alongside Bronny in the NBA will be .

"I can’t wait for this moment. I really cannot wait to hit the floor with [Bronny]. It’s going to be pretty surreal for me. That might be the first time I sit back like, ‘Oh, s—, this is really cool.' I’ve been so in the moment my whole career that I pray and hope that me being with my son will finally give me the opportunity to pull back and appreciate it."

LeBron has been in the NBA longer than his son has been alive, something which applies to a majority of the young players who have come through in the two most recent Drafts. He's an elder statesman now, but his son can absorb his knowledge firsthand as part of the Lakers locker room.
