NBA Referee 'Gucci’ Releases ‘Ball Does Lie’ Shirt For Officials Who Get Trash Talked By Players

NBA referee James 'Gucci' Williams appeared to release some cheeky merchandise for his fellow NBA officials. In a video , he unveiled the new shirt, told referees who like to argue with players, and joked that the ball does often lie, poking fun at players who use the 'ball don't lie' adage when pleading their case with referees.

“Check it out, all y’all referees that wanna talk smack on the floor. Yup, ball does lie. It lies all the time. That ball lies every single day.”

Williams rose to prominence among NBA circles after NBA star Ja Morant poked fun at him for looking similar to famed rapper Gucci Mane, thus giving him the nickname going forward. Perhaps Williams is using the cache of his nickname to release some merchandise while also taking digs at some NBA players.

There has been a very contentious relationship between NBA players and referees. Players often accuse referees of missing calls or blatantly making the wrong call in order to hurt them or their teams. Whereas, referees believe that players often complain about every wrong call made and question them whenever things don't go their way.

The truth, as always, is usually somewhere in the middle. Of course, referees are going to make mistakes and miss some calls, as is the nature of any sport that has an element of human error to it. And there should be mechanisms in place to help fix these mistakes to make sure players and teams are not penalized.

However, players are also quick to blame the referees whenever a mistake happens, or even if they think one has taken place even if it hasn't. A referee's call, good or bad, should rarely be the crutch players use to justify their wins and losses, and if it is, then that speaks more to their inability to seal wins in a timely and proper fashion.

Referee Controversy In The Spotlight Since Last Year

The divide between NBA players and referees came into the spotlight in January of 2023, when the officials made some egregious calls against the Lakers during their game against the Celtics, including a blatant missed foul call on the Celtics as LeBron James drove to the basket in the closing seconds of the game. These missed calls would cast the Lakers a precious win.

In response to the outrage from the players and the fans, the NBA Referees Association put out a statement that informed everyone that they are also capable of making mistakes on the court as they are human. However, it turned out to be deeper than that.

Eric Lewis, who was the official for the game who missed the call, was put under investigation for having several burner accounts on X, where it was exposed that he was a Celtics fan. But before the investigation could conclude, Lewis abruptly retired, perhaps to avoid scrutiny of his social media activity and potential biased refereeing.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver consistently speaks about the officiating concerns that players and fans express to him. The league regularly monitors the situation with the officiating and looks to improve things wherever possible. While a lot of strides have been made, there is still a lot of work left to do.
