The Chicago Sky have fired head coach Teresa Weatherspoon after one season in charge of the franchise where she managed a 13-27 record, missing the Playoffs. Sky superstar Angel Reese has issued a lengthy social media post expressing how unhappy she is to see Weatherspoon go after the pivotal role she played in Reese's development over her rookie WNBA season.

"I’m heartbroken. I’m literally lost for words knowing what this woman meant to me at such a pivotal point in my life. She was the only person that believed in me. The one that trusted me. Many don’t even know what it’s like to be a black woman in sports when nobody believes in you. You had a tough job."

"All the crazy circumstances that we went through this year and when your back was against the wall, you always believed. I came to Chicago because of YOU. You were an unsung hero in my life. We built a relationship in a short amount of time that will last forever."

"I’ll never question God why he brings people into my life and takes them away from me in the capacity that I need them but I’ve always believed everyone is in your life for a reason and a season. You were the best reason and season. You didn’t deserve this but I can’t thank you enough. I love you Tspoon."

Weatherspoon is a WNBA legend, winning two Defensive Player of the Year awards, leading a season in assists, leading two seasons in steals, alongside making five All-Star teams and four All-WNBA selections. She spent the last three seasons as an assistant for the New Orleans Pelicans, leaving the franchise to take the head coach role for the Sky.

Even if the winning results weren't in Weatherspoon's first season as a head coach in the WNBA, it was clear that she connected with her players and that they respected her as their coach. We criticize NBA teams for moving on from coaches far too easily, but this is a pretty surprising move by the Sky. They have a top pick coming their way in the 2025 WNBA Draft and could've rebuilt with Weatherspoon at the helm.

Angel Reese averaged 13.6 points, 13.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.3 steals, and 0.5 blocks in a strong rookie campaign. While there are aspects of her game that fans want her to improve on, especially offensive efficiency, she's proven that she's a star who could take the franchise far.

If she is the Sky's franchise cornerstone, not consulting her at all in a decision like this is odd.

The Sky won the WNBA Championship as recently as 2021, but have experienced a significant talent drain in recent seasons with the likes of Candace Parker, Kahlea Cooper, and more leaving the franchise.

I agree with Reese. Why did they fire Coach Witherspoon…. The players responded to her coaching and the rookies really responded stepping up and playing good basketball for the team.
