Bronny James has now played two preseason games for the Los Angeles Lakers and Anthony Davis has been impressed by what he has seen. After the Lakers' 118-114 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Sunday, Davis was asked about Bronny's play in preseason and commended him particularly for his defense.
"He's tough," Davis said . "Obviously, he's defensive-minded. Some great blocks in Game 1. The physicality, he gets over on screens. Good with his hands as far as deflection and steals. But he's also still learning.
"He's still trying to figure everything out, so we have to realize that," Davis continued. "He's still a rookie. It's a different style of basketball in the league. But I like what I'm seeing from him, on both ends of the floor, especially defensively."
Bronny hasn't stuffed the stat sheet thus far, but he has impressed on the defensive end. Currently, the 20-year-old is averaging 1.0 points, 1.5 rebounds, 0.5 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game in the preseason while shooting 14.3% from the field.
It has been clear for a while now that Bronny's offensive game needs a lot of work, so it's not surprising as such, to see those numbers. He does have plenty of time on his hands to get better at least and I hope he spends much of this upcoming season in the G League, as it would be best for his development.
As for Davis, well, he certainly doesn't need to spend any time in the G League. The 31-year-old made his 2024 preseason debut against the Suns and finished with 17 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal in 18 minutes. Davis didn't play in the second half and I don't expect him to feature a whole lot in preseason after he played for Team USA at the Olympics.
LeBron James Shared His Thoughts On Playing With Bronny James
The game between the Lakers and the Suns also ended up being the one where Bronny and his father LeBron James played together for the first time in the NBA. It was wonderful to see them out there together and after the game, LeBron shared his reaction to playing with Bronny.
"Cool for the both of us and especially for our family, pretty cool... Definitely a moment that I will never forget... For a father, it means everything."
"For someone who didn't have that growing up, to be able to have that influence on your kids, influence on your son, and be able to have moments with your son - and then ultimately to be able to work with your son, that's one of the greatest things a father could ever hope or wish for, so it was pretty cool."
It was very special for those watching, and so I can only imagine what it was like for LeBron and Bronny. We didn't get to see them make a play together but that will happen at some point, either in the preseason or when the actual games begin. It remains to be seen how much Bronny will feature in the regular season, but he is expected to play in the season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
