Sacramento Kings point guard De'Aaron Fox will not be extending his contract with the franchise this season, as reported by Shams Charania . Fox will bypass a three-year, $165 million contract from the Kings to put himself in contention for a four-year, $229 million or a five-year, $345 million contract if he makes the All-NBA this season.

"I am told that Kings cornerstone guard De'Aaron Fox is bypassing a three-year, $165 million maximum extension before the start of the season. For Fox and his rep Rich Paul at Klutch Sports, this is essentially a contractual decision. When you think about next summer, he will be eligible for a four-year, $229 million extension or another massive number, five years, $345 million if Fox makes the All-NBA this year."

Fox has been an active participant in conversations around the team's roster and future, with Charania revealing Fox endorsed the acquisition of DeMar DeRozan this summer.

"This is not a reflection of how Fox feels about the organization. I am told he's very engaged with key Kings officials with the team when you think about all the key decisions the franchise has made over the years, including the addition of DeMar DeRozan this offseason."

"That Kings front office, their ownership, Vivek Ranadive, continues to strengthen their relationship with De'Aaron Fox, but he's bypassing this extension for a much larger one potentially down the line."

Fox averaged 26.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 5.6 assists last season, missing out on an All-NBA selection which means he's currently not eligible for a max contract. But because of his All-NBA appearance in 2023, Fox can become supermax eligible if he makes it back to the All-NBA team this season.

He's on the verge of being a Kings legend, becoming the face of the franchise after years in purgatory and helping them end a 16-year Playoff drought alongside Domantas Sabonis. Unlike Sabonis, Fox is a homegrown prospect who the franchise believed in so much that they passed on selecting Luka Doncic in the 2018 NBA Draft .

If Fox can lead them back to the Playoffs and potentially lead them on a run, the Kings faithful will always root for him and hope he extends with the franchise, no matter what the salary comes out to be.

Will De'Aaron Fox Contend For All-NBA?

It'll be tough for Fox to make the All-NBA if the Kings aren't a definite top-six team in the West. With DeRozan and Domantas Sabonis also contending for All-NBA positions on the now-positionless teams, Fox will have a mountain to climb.

There has to be a baseline of regular season success that Fox needs to live up to, as fans were upset he didn't make the cut last season despite the Kings finishing No. 9 in seeding. Unless his production matches or transcends that of the best guards in the NBA like Luka Doncic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, leading his team to wins will be imperative to even come into contention.

Predicting how others will perform as All-NBA selections is harder now than ever before due to the NBA's games played requirement and the positionless nature of the teams. Nonetheless, Fox will focus on his own game and maximizing success for the Kings.

The franchise could be among the teams contending for a top-six position in the West given how they've performed in recent seasons. They were in contention for the top six last season before Malik Monks got injured, which led to the team sliding down the order. The addition of DeRozan along with everyone staying healthy could put the Kings in contention for one of their best seasons in two decades.
