Monty Williams Will Coach His Son’s High School Basketball Team, Still Owed $65 Million From Pistons

Monty Williams has opted not to return to another NBA team this season as head coach, as Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports reports that he has accepted the head coaching position at TMI Episcopal prep school in San Antonio. Williams has taken the job to be able to coach his son, Elijah, who plays for TMI Episcopal.

Williams is still set to earn $65 million over the next five years from the Detroit Pistons, who will continue to pay him despite terminating his contract this offseason. Perhaps the lack of financial pressure played a role in Williams taking on this much lower-profile job, as it allowed him to focus on his family.

Williams, who was let go by the Detroit Pistons after his first and only season with the franchise after going 14-68, could have made a return to an NBA team, with several franchises looking for coaching changes during the offseason. But his name was conspicuous from its absence when coaching options were being discussed.

His son, Elijah, is 6'6' and considered the 11th best high school prospect, and the 4th best power forward prospect. Perhaps Williams believes that he, as the head coach, can get the best out of his son and help him develop to a level where he can reach his professional aspirations.

Williams, who just a few years ago, coached the Phoenix Suns to the NBA Finals, had planned to take a sabbatical after being dismissed by the Phoenix Suns in 2023, after their loss to the Nuggets in the playoffs. But the Pistons offered him an incredible six-year, $75.5 million contract, to which he could not say no.

Will Monty Williams Ever Return To The NBA?

With Williams taking a job to coach his son's high school team, fans might wonder if he will ever return to the NBA in a head coach position. He's being paid handsomely, as he and the Pistons never agreed to a contract buyout, so they have to pay him the full amount of the contract.

Williams' son Elijah graduated in 2026, but, he does have another son at TMI Escopal, Micah, who is set to graduate in 2029. If he chooses to stay with TMI Escopal till then, he will be paid by the Pistons during that entire time, as his deal with the Pistons is guaranteed for six years.

Williams is still an excellent coach in the NBA, despite the poor record he sustained with the Pistons. The Pistons have been one of the worst teams in the NBA for quite some time, long before Williams was brought in as head coach. So their shoddy performances should not be a reflection of Williams' coaching ability.

Perhaps the Pistons will try and negotiate a buyout with Williams down the line, as he still has one of the most lucrative coaching contracts in NBA history, despite not holding the position anymore. With how much turnover there is in the NBA when it comes to coaches, Williams could make a return to the NBA sooner rather than later.
