Starving kitten stuck under Fall River boardwalk. Watch the Animal Rescue League save him.

FALL RIVER — The Animal Rescue League of Boston recently saved a 9-week-old starving kitten from danger when it was found stranded under the boardwalk on the city’s waterfront.

According to the ARL, a couple walking along the boardwalk on July 19 between the Cove Restaurant and Marina and the City Pier heard a kitten mewing. The kitten, a gray male, was stuck on the riprap along the shoreline about 20 feet below the boardwalk. The couple contacted the ARL for help.

Working with Fall River Animal Control , ARL Field Services found the kitten curled up on a rock, in a sloped area inaccessible without risk of injury. The stones along the shoreline also provide many places for a cat to squeeze through to hide, and where it could become stuck.

“The fear was the kitten would run and hide if responders attempted to come down to his level,” the ARL stated.

The ARL lowered a humane cat trap to the area with ropes while responders threw food below to tempt the kitten inside. After about 40 minutes, the kitten stepped into the trap and was captured safely.

“The kitten, now named Wharf, was transported to ARL’s Boston Animal Care and Adoption Center, where he was immediately fed and given a thorough veterinary exam," the ARL stated. “Aside from being ravenously hungry and frightened, Wharf was in good overall health.”

The ARL said Wharf was neutered and has already been adopted to a forever home in Cambridge.

“ARL wishes to thank the Good Samaritans who reported the wayward kitten, and Fall River Animal Control for their assistance in rescuing this adventurous animal,” the ARL stated.
