Cherryville baseball alumnus selected on final day of 2024 MLB Draft
Cherryville baseball product Dalton Pence could soon take his first steps toward an MLB career. The former Ironmen standout and University of North Carolina pitcher was selected Tuesday by the Texas Rangers with pick No. 345 in the 11th round of the 2024 MLB Draft. He is the first Cherryville product selected in the MLB Draft since 2000, when Ralph Roberts was picked in the 32nd round by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Hickory Woman Detained By Alexander County Sheriff’s Office
A Hickory woman was arrested on Sunday by the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office. Melanie Amanda Greene, age 43, was served Catawba County warrants for felony insurance fraud and felony larceny. She has been released from custody under a secured bond of $15,000. Greene was scheduled to appear in Catawba County Superior Court on Monday.

Fight between coach, umpire ruins Little League game in Wilson
The game was between two 12-and-under teams, Bull City Little League and Cherryville, in a state championship tournament at Wilson's Gillette Baseball Complex. During the top of the fifth inning, video shows a Cherryville coach approach the home plate umpire along the third base line. The umpire, Robby Beamon, can be heard saying that the coach should be ejected from the game and leave the field for using profanity.

Stolen car leads officers on chase from York Co. to Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - A police chase that started in York County, S.C. made its way to Charlotte Monday morning, according to officials. According to the York County Sheriff’s Office, they were in pursuit of a car stolen from Huntersville. Because traffic was heavy and continuing the chase would have raised safety concerns, deputies stopped the pursuit.

Gastonia officers rescue puppy that was stabbed during domestic dispute
GASTONIA, N.C. — A German shepherd puppy that was stabbed during a domestic dispute is recovered and living in her forever home, Gastonia Police said. Gastonia officers responded to a domestic situation at a home on June 9. When officers arrived, they found 2-month-old Clementine suffering from a stab wound. The German shepherd was stabbed in the back during the incident, police said.
