Over 80 critically endangered orange-bellied parrots have returned to their breeding ground in Tasmania, marking the highest number in 15 years. Despite dedicated conservation efforts, the species faced near extinction, with only three wild females returning from migration in 2016. However, recent successes suggest progress, although challenges persist.

Volunteers have played a crucial role in aiding researchers in understanding and assisting these birds, known for their stubbornness towards extinction. Despite decades of breeding programs, releasing captive-bred birds failed to effectively boost wild populations, mainly due to high mortality during migration.

Orange-bellied parrots undertake a perilous long-distance migration, facing threats such as habitat loss, predators, and changing fire regimes. Reduced burn-offs in breeding sites have led to declining food plant populations, exacerbating genetic issues and disease susceptibility.

Efforts to reduce mortality rates and enhance survival include supplementary feeding and trialling new burn-off regimes in Tasmania. Researchers meticulously manage each bird and nest, while institutes and volunteers contribute to captive breeding and monitoring efforts.

Detailed data collected from these conservation efforts offer valuable insights into endangered species management. Understanding mortality consequences and optimizing body conditions are crucial for habitat management and the success of captive breeding.

Despite the challenges, there is hope that continued efforts may rescue these birds from extinction. Lessons learned from orange-bellied parrot conservation could benefit other struggling species amidst the ongoing global biodiversity crisis.
