For the first time in the United States, regular cannabis use has surpassed frequent alcohol consumption, according to a national survey. The findings, analyzed by researchers from Carnegie Mellon's Heinz College, highlight a significant shift in drug use habits. Data from the US National Survey on Drug Use and Health, which has collected information from over 1.6 million people since 1979, shows a notable increase in daily or near-daily cannabis use, particularly since 1992.

In 1992, daily alcohol drinkers outnumbered daily cannabis users by a factor of ten. By 2022, this trend reversed, with 17.7 million daily cannabis users compared to 14.7 million frequent alcohol drinkers. Since 2010, about one-third of those who reported using cannabis in the past month did so daily or nearly daily, while the proportion of daily alcohol drinkers remained steady at around 9–11%.

These changes align with broader trends among young Americans, including decreased alcohol misuse and increased cannabis use. The shift also mirrors evolving US policies, from conservative drug policies in the 1980s and 1990s to the widespread legalization of medical cannabis since 1993. However, cultural changes and shifting attitudes towards these substances also likely played a role.

Researchers note that cannabis use is now on a different scale than before legalization. This trend is expected to continue, especially with the US Drug Enforcement Agency's recent announcement to ease federal restrictions on cannabis, reclassifying it similarly to some painkillers. Despite cannabis's growing popularity for pain relief, the effectiveness of its medicinal properties varies across studies, populations, and conditions.
