An unusual northern rātā tree has been named New Zealand's Tree of the Year for 2024. This striking tree, which resembles an Ent from "The Lord of the Rings," stands out due to its unique appearance. Its two large trunks and sprawling roots give it the appearance of walking across a field. Located in a paddock near a cemetery in Karamea on the west coast of South Island, the tree is approximately 105 feet (32 meters) tall, similar to a seven-story building.

The northern rātā, known scientifically as Metrosideros robusta, is one of New Zealand's tallest flowering trees and can live up to 1,000 years. This tree is notable for its extraordinary structure and has survived for around 150 years since the surrounding forest was cleared. Its roots likely grew around a now-deceased host tree, contributing to its unusual "walking" appearance.

Northern rātā trees are epiphytes, starting life on other trees before their aerial roots reach the ground. Once common in New Zealand forests, this species has become nationally vulnerable due to habitat loss, invasive species like the common brushtail possums, hybridization with pōhutukawa trees, and myrtle rust, a pathogenic fungus.

The walking tree's award-winning status reflects its exceptional characteristics, showcasing the remarkable natural heritage of New Zealand.
