A recent study by Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore reveals strong public interest in autonomous air taxis, small self-flying aircraft designed for short-distance travel. The research surveyed 1,002 Singaporean participants and found that nearly 46% are inclined to use air taxis once available, with over 36% planning regular use.

The study, published in Technology in Society, identifies several factors influencing this positive sentiment. These include trust in the AI technology used in air taxis, the enjoyment derived from using such technology, the anticipated benefits, and the influence of media coverage on public perceptions.

Air taxis are nearing practical deployment, with China and Europe making strides in safety approvals and operational trials. The findings suggest significant potential for this technology in Singapore, which aims to become a hub for air taxi services. The study indicates that public trust in the technology, its perceived usefulness, and media attention are critical in shaping users' intentions.

The researchers used a validated model to measure factors such as trust, media attention, and the perceived ease of use of air taxis. The analysis showed that people generally view air taxis positively, with many believing that they would enhance productivity and be enjoyable. Trust in AI technology was also a significant factor, though surprisingly, habitual use was identified as a strong predictor of future use despite fewer participants viewing it as a regular habit.

The study underscores the role of media in shaping public opinion and the importance of transparent, balanced reporting on emerging technologies. Effective communication and positive media coverage could be crucial in fostering acceptance and adoption of air taxis, aligning with NTU's strategic goals for impactful research.
