Former cops open cannabis store in Dundas, featuring CBD, THC products
Before they decided on a store location in Dundas, Mike Hendricks and Kiel Rushton sat and watched the constant flow of traffic move in and out of the Kwik Trip at Hester Streets and Schilling Drive.
Here's how to help with flood recovery, cleanup
The two rivers that meet in Faribault crested near or over their all-time highs over the weekend and Monday, causing damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure in some areas. Volunteers, whether individuals or organizations, are needed in all the cities that flooded, including Faribault, Morristown, Waterville and more. While most the river gauges indicate the rivers have started to recede, the Cannon River in Morristown is being especially stubborn, according to the mayor. ...
Faribault School Board troubled by student, staff survey results
A spring survey of Faribault Public Schools students and staff appears to indicate an overall trend of decreased morale, frustration and dissatisfaction, with more students and teachers indicating that they do not feel they have consistently been treated with respect. Growing disconnect between teachers and administration appears to be among the negative trends indicated in the survey, with the share of teachers feeling that administration involves them in decision making dropping all the way from 73% to 55% since just the fall. ...
Wildlife observations from along the flooded Cannon River in Faribault
Wildlife senses, understands, picks up on nuances that we as humans often fail to notice in our heads-bent-to-our-smartphones, busy scheduled lives. The recent flooding is a prime example. I saw countless cellphones raised to record floodwaters and rising rivers. I carried my 35mm Canon camera, drawn just like everyone else to document the historic natural event unfolding before me along the Cannon River in Faribault. But I also noticed the...
CAC adds Pet Food Shelf to community assets
In some cases, a pet is the closest relationship a person has to any living being. Local dog trainer Shahar Fearing knows how close that pet-person relationship can be as the owner of Four Winds Connections, a dog training service based in Northfield. Fearing is the owner of Four Winds Dog Training and a part of the leadership circle of a new non profit called Four Winds Connections. Fearing has...
Dundas City Hall transformed with a century of local memorabilia
Inside the room where the Dundas City Council meets each month, members of the 100-yea- old Dundas Women’s Study Club set up a museum of club booklets, photographs and memorabilia last Saturday. The exhibit spanned the years 1924 to today and was arranged in 10 exhibits showcasing each decade of the study club’s existence. Current and past members, along with their families and guests enjoyed the celebration, which also featured two performances at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. of an original skit “School Daze” first performed by an early member in the 1940s. Special coffee mugs noting the centennial were for sale for $10. All current study club members who greeted visitors, handed out name tags and performed in the skit wore special carnation corsages donated by Judy’s Floral Design of Northfield.
PHOTOS: From city to countryside, flooding continues to affect Faribault area & beyond
Nearly two dozen city streets, county highways and township roads remain closed throughout Rice County due to floodwaters. The number seems unprecedented. Closures include several streets in Faribault along the Cannon and Straight Rivers. More rain is possible later today. Exactly what we don’t need. However, Faribault city officials noted both rivers began to drop Monday morning. As inconvenient as these road closures may be, especially to locals, it’s nothing compared to the flooding of businesses, homes, campgrounds and more, especially in neighboring Waterville. The...
Community members, sandbags help mitigate damage during floods
Sandbag barriers helped to prevent this weekend’s historic flood from entering or destroying property, whether homes or businesses. Some volunteers spent the entire day prepping sandbags for others in local communities. Sandbags were used in Morristown, Faribault, Northfield, Warsaw, Waterville and more over the weekend. The sandbag stations saw many visitors who were volunteering to help others fill or deliver to those in need. Businesses and residents used sandbags to...

Area rivers reach historic levels, flood area cities
Floods have hit Faribault, Morristown, Dundas, Northfield and likely more cities in and around Rice County, as river gauges surpass their historic highs around Faribault. "Barricades remain in place blocking a portion of Second Avenue, in front of Fitness in Motion, due to water impacting the road," said Faribault Communications Director Brad Phenow. Rain forecasted all weekend; river levels 'broke the record already'
Neighbors gripped shovels and stuck them into a pile of sand in Waterville, where trucks and forklifts lined up to take them to people’s houses. One of those houses is that of the Bombay family, who trudged through the knee-deep water and lined their property with sandbags Friday. With a similar situation quickly arising in Morristown and another sandbag operation in Faribault already underway, the situation appears dire. Additional rain is expected all weekend. ...

In a game that was originally going to be played in New Market on Wednesday night, wet field conditions forced a move from the Fish Bowl to Bell Field, where the Lakers scored eight times in the final four innings to make the Muskies feel like a fish out of water in a 9-4 Lakers win on Wednesday Night at Bell Field. New Market got on the board right away in the first inning. Lead off batter Jake Lundquist walked, stole second and scored on...
Area farmers cope with heavy rain; Cannon River flooding expected over weekend
The Cannon River in Rice County is forecasted to get within 0.1 inches of major flood levels Monday, and local agriculture might see some lower yields. Rice County Commissioner and fifth generation farmer Jim Purfeerst said his prayers were answered this year, since he’s comfortably beyond the drought that plagued the area the last couple years. But it might be a bit more rain than he and other local farmers bargained for, and it isn’t looking to let up this weekend. ...
