In a game that was originally going to be played in New Market on Wednesday night, wet field conditions forced a move from the Fish Bowl to Bell Field, where the Lakers scored eight times in the final four innings to make the Muskies feel like a fish out of water in a 9-4 Lakers win on Wednesday Night at Bell Field.

New Market got on the board right away in the first inning. Lead off batter Jake Lundquist walked, stole second and scored on an Adam Wood single. Lakers starting pitcher Egan Bonde was able to escape further damage with Wood being thrown out at second sandwiched around two strikeouts.

The Muskies added onto the lead in the third. Connor Weed singled to lead off the inning, stole second base and later scored as Carter Hendrickson doubled off the the left field fence. The Lakers had an answer in the bottom of the frame. Zander Fitzsimmons lined a single to lead off the inning. After getting to third base via a wild pitch and a passed ball, a Joey Grote grounder to second was thrown wide of first allowing Fitzsimmons to score and cut the deficit to a run.

The Muskies struck in the fifth. Connor Weed reached on a one out walk and Lundquist followed with a home run to left field to make it a 4-1 game.

The Lakers would not be denied in their half of the inning. Aiden Tobin walked, Drew Conrad was hit by a pitch. A deep fly to center moved both runners up. Nate Rost grounded to second to score a run before a two run home run by Austin Rendler tied the game at four. Dylan O’ Neil followed with his third walk of the game and Hudson Dillon singled ending the night for Muskies starter Pat Ernster. Ethan Bombardier came in for New Market, committed a balk and followed it later with a wild pitch to score O’Neil and give Faribault its first lead of the night, 5-4.

Faribault tacked on to the lead in the seventh. Nate Rost singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a bloop single to right field by Rendler. O’Neil gained first on his fourth walk of the evening. Dillon inside outed a single to right to score Rendler.

In the Lakers’ eighth, Rost reached on a double to right field. Rendler singled to plate Rost. With the bases loaded and two outs Fitzsimmons walked to bring in the Lakers ninth run of the night.

The Lakers got superb work out of the bullpen as Hudson Dillon came on and shutout the Muskies in the final four innings preserving the save for Bonde. Joey Ernster took the loss for New Market allowing five runs in 4.2 innings of work.

    Three Stars of the Game

    1. Hudson Dillon-Faribault. It’s tough to not take an offensive player as a #1 star when you score nine runs, but what Dillon did tonight warranted it. In an outing that was the most dominant of the last few years by someone not named Lane or Petricka, Dillon shutout the Muskies, striking out nine batters. No Muskie put the ball in play in the first nine batters that Dillon faced. Dillon also chipped in at the plate going 2-3 and reaching two other times safely.

    2. Austin Rendler-Faribault. Rendler struck the big blow of the game for the Lakers as his two run home run in the fifth tied the game at five. Rendler singled and scored in his two trips to the plate after the home run scoring each time and driving in another run.

    3. Nate Rost-Faribault. Chalk one up to the vet too. Rost playing against his former club, went 3-5 with an RBI groundout and two runs scored, one of which we in the Press Box were fortunate he got up from as it appeared his slide hit a speed trap right before home plate.

    Notes

The Lakers are on a roll. After being rained out against Jordan last Saturday night, the pitching sets up nicely for the weekend. Shakopee comes to town for a DRS matchup on Friday night at 7:30 before a non league tilt versus Hastings on Sunday. In what seems to be a theme for baseball in the last month, weather permitting.

Before flying out to left field in his last at bat, catcher Dylan O’Neil walked four consecutive times, scoring what proved to be the game winning run.
