The Faribault VFW baseball team returned to action Monday night in a doubleheader against Kasson at home after splitting a doubleheader against Rochester Century Sunday.

Faribault won both games of the doubleheader versus Kasson at Bell Field. The first game was a nine-inning comeback thriller, with Faribault walking it off in the ninth, winning 9-8. The second game lasted only three innings, as Faribault won 4-2.

What looked to be a long day for the home team turned into one of their best performances of the year in the first game of the doubleheader. Down 8-0 after an eight-run second inning by Kasson, Faribault got two runs in the second inning to make it 8-2. it would then slowly scratch their way back into the game.

They got one more run in the fourth when Erickson got hit by a pitch and later scored on a single by hot hitting Atley Qualey to make it 8-3. Qualey is one of the leaders on the team in quality at bats on the year.

Harley Llamas came on in relief to pitch in the third inning and pitched a scoreless four innings to keep Faribault in the game.

In the fifth, the Falcons got another run to make it 8-5 on a single by Dominic Erickson. He then stole second and third bases and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Kreager. Next, Gavin Erickson walked and stole second. He scored after a single by R.J. Wasilowski.

Faribault later tied it up in the bottom of the sixth. Luke McCrea and Dom Erickson walked, and they scored after a single by Kreager. Still down 8-7, Gavin Erickson singled, bringing home Kreager to tie it up.

Carter Quinlan came on in relief for the extra innings and shut down Kasson. With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Harley Llamas singled and later stole second base. With two outs, McCrea hit a soft ground ball to third, and he beat the throw.

As the play went on, Llamas kept running around third and beat the throw to home for a dramatic and unusual way to walk off a game.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Faribault got on the board early in the first inning. VFW allows teams to play 12 innings maximum any given day, and since the first game went nine innings, the second was maxed out at three innings.

Gavin Erickson got hit by a pitch and later scored on a single by Kreager for a quick 1-0 Faribault lead in the first.

The Falcons would put up three more runs in the second to put the game away for good. With a man on base, Dom Erickson singled, and Gavin Erickson tripled to make it 3-1. Kreager then hit a long sacrifice fly scoring Erickson to make it 4-1.

In a game that was only played in three innings, the Kasson team could not come back from that big of a deficit. Erickson would come on in relief of starter Luke Mcrea and shut Kasson down for the sweep of both games.

Faribault will end up playing six games in four days as they hosted Stewartville on Tuesday night and traveled to Waseca on Wednesday. After winning against Steartville 12-2, Faribault sits at 9-8 on the year and are currently on a four-game win streak. The game at Waseca is their last game of the regular season.
