    Farmville Fire

    The annual meeting of the Farmville Rural Fire Association Inc. will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, at the fire station, 3713 N. Main St. Officers for the coming year will be elected and any other business will be conducted.

    Rose sale

    The Women of the Moose are having their annual Valentine’s Rose Sale from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 13 and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 14 at the Greenville Moose Lodge, 5393 Reedy Branch Road, Winterville. The group will have roses, candy and stuffed animals as well as other flowers for sale. Pre-orders are available as well as pre-made arrangements available for pick-up.     Community health fair

    Greene County Public Library will host a Community Health Fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 13, at 229 Kingold Blvd., Snow Hill. The free event will offer diabetes and blood pressure screenings, Healthy Blue and Alzheimer’s Association community resources and more. Attendees will be entered for a chance to win a wellness basket, which includes a Fitbit. For more information, call 747-3437.

    Coffee and conversations

    A Coffee and Conversation session on Alzheimer’s Disease will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17, at Greene County Public Library, 229 Kingold Blvd., Snow Hill. The program is created to give people information. resources, and a space to discuss the disease and share their experiences. Bring your favorite coffee mug. Coffee and snacks will be provided free.     Black history program

    St. James AME Zion Church, 403 W. Harper St., Snow Hill, will host Greene County Past and Present to celebrate black history at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 18. The event is open to the public. The Rev. William McDow is the pastor.

    Spring Sports

    Greene County Parks and Recreation is registering participants in spring sports from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday through Feb. 26 in the lobby of the Wellness Center, 84 N. Perry Drive. Sports include baseball, T-ball, soccer and softball. Prices are $55 for baseball and $40 for other sports. An extra $25 will be charged for late registrations. Call 747-7518.

    Winterville Museum

    The Winterville Historical and Arts Society, 2543 Church St., opens the Winterville Museum from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday. Located in the Cox-Ange House, the museum houses artifacts and displays that reflect the history of Winterville and Pitt County. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.     Unnatural Resources Fair

    The 31st Annual Eastern Carolina Unnatural Resources Fair will be held 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 23, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Feb. 24 and noon to 4 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Greenville Convention Center, 303 S.W. Greenville Blvd. The event celebrates and recognizes creative use of recycled resources. Visit unnaturalresources.org.

    Black Composers Concert

    The Pitt Community College Music Department presents its annual Black Composers Concert at 7 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Smith Center for Student Advancement, 1935 Warren Drive, Winterville. This concert will feature the PCC Jazz Band, the PCSECHS Jazz Band, and special guests the Emerald City Big Band. You’ll hear music from Duke Ellington to Stevie Wonder.     Library book sale

    The Friends of Sheppard Memorial Library’s 33rd annual Used Book Sale will begin with a members-only event from 5-8 p.m. Feb. 29 at Greenville Convention Center, 303 S.W. Greenville Blvd. Memberships are available at the door or online at sheppardlibrary.org. The book sale will be open to the general public from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. March 1, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. March 2 and noon-3:30 p.m. March 3.

    Senior Center farmers market

    Vendors from the Leroy James Farmers Market plus more will be at the Pitt County Senior Center, at 4551 County Home Road, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays through February while the market is closed.

    Recreation grants

    Pitt County Government is accepting applications for its Recreation Program Management Funds, which are available to support and enhance the delivery of recreation programs open to all county residents. The funds require a 50/50 match from the applicant. Applications are available in the Community Schools and Recreation Center, 4561 County Home Road, and at www.pittcountync.gov/formslibrary or www.pittscr.com. The submission deadline is 5 p.m. Jan. 29.

    NCECA Scholarship

    High school seniors, full-time college students and adults wanting to attend college are eligible for the North Carolina Extension & Community Association Scholarship. State residents planning to attend a North Carolina college, community college or technical institute in the fall of 2024 may apply. The scholarship deadline is Feb. 1.     Hospice volunteers

    3HC is seeking volunteers for its hospice program. Volunteers provide support to caregivers, offer companionship to patients and take part in meaningful activities. They also can offer spiritual support, administrative and clerical support, take part in special events and fundraising activities and assist the Wings Program for Grieving Children or the Veterans to Veteran program. Residents of Greene, Pitt, Beaufort or Lenoir counties who would like to spend time with patients and their families in need can email volunteer coordinator Nena Ellis at nellis@3hc.org.

    Vaccines

    The Greene County Department of Public Health is offering COVID vaccines Monday through Friday by appointment for people 6 months and older. To schedule, call 747-8181. If you receive Blue Cross Blue Shield North Carolina, North Carolina State Health Plan or Medicaid, bring your card. Medicare not accepted at this time. Vaccines are $140 for self-pay individuals but are free at most pharmacies. Flu shots also are available by appointment.

    The Pitt County Health Department, 201 Government Circle, Greenville, is providing free flu and COVID19 vaccines for adults who have no health insurance or whose insurance doesn’t cover all vaccination costs. The vaccinations are being provided though the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Bridge Access program. Call 902-2449 to make an appointment.

    Farmville Senior Council

    The Farmville Senior Council, which has been a nonprofit since 1979, meets the third Wednesday of the month at the Farmville Public Library, 4276 W. Church St., Farmville.     Give Blood

    The American Red Cross Donation Center, 700 Cromwell Drive, is open from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday-Sunday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday. Visit www.redcross.org or call 758-1140 or 1-800-733-2767 to make appointments at the center or at blood drives coming up at the following locations.

    Animal adoptions

    The Humane Society of Eastern Carolina, 3520 Tupper Drive, is open by appointment only from 1-5 p.m. Thursday-Friday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday.     Pitt County Animal Services, 4550 County Home Road, is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays by appointment only for adoptions. No owner surrenders are available. Call 902-1725. Visit petango.com/pittshelter to view animals available for adoption. Animal services offers several volunteer opportunities including dog walking, doggie day out and reading buddy programs.     The Greene County Animal Shelter, 1985 N.C. 903 North, Snow Hill, is open 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.     Family Chess Club

    The Family Chess Club meets from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at Apt To Learn, 650 E. Fire Tower Road, Suite B, Winterville. Chess lectures will be from 6-7 p.m. Chess sets are provided. All levels of players are welcome. The club is an affiliate of the United States Chess Federation and conducts sanctioned chess tournaments on occasion.
