Landen Barnes, a standout student at Farmville Central High School, has been selected as the inaugural recipient of the “Farmville 18” Scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded by a group of accomplished African American men who grew up in the Farmville community, are members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and are dedicated to providing educational opportunities for local students.

A well-rounded student, Barnes displayed exceptional leadership both academically and athletically throughout his high school career, the group said.

He was actively involved in student government and excelled in football, basketball and track. His commitment to excellence was recognized when he was awarded the State Farm 2022-23 Sportsmanship Award at the basketball state championship game in Chapel Hill.

With plans to attend Elizabeth City State University in the fall to major in kinesiology/sports management, his passion for sports and dedication to his community have set him apart as a deserving recipient of the Farmville 18 Scholarship, the group said.

The Farmville 18 members, who all graduated from H.B. Sugg and Farmville Central High Schools and went on to attend colleges and universities, are proud to support promising students like Landen Barnes in pursuing their academic and career goals” the group said.

Members of the group include: Ronald Barnes, Royce Barrett, Donald Dixon, Dave Ebron, Larry Ellis, Jeff Fields, Ronald Gay, Jeff German, James R. Gorham, Walter Gorham, Gary Hyman, William Jones, Avon Morgan, DeMario Ried, Ricky Streeter, Napoleon Tyson, Tony A. Tyson and Charles Henry Wooten.

“Congratulations to Landen Barnes on this well-deserved honor, and best wishes for his future endeavors at Elizabeth City State University,” the group said. “The Farmville 18 Scholarship represents a commitment to empowering the next generation of leaders in the Farmville community.”
