    Vacation Bible School pops up: Calendar for the week of June 28

    As we continue on through the month of July, a number of church events start popping up on the calendar. It’s time for homecomings and Vacation Bible School (VBS) for many churches in the area. There are also cruise-ins and historical society meetings, as well as free music. Here’s a look at what’s happening.

    JULY 12

    ARTIST RECEPTION – Central Virginia Arts will hold an artist reception on Friday, July 12. The event will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Riverside Cafe, located at 522 N. Main Street in Farmville. Exhibits will feature the photographs of Patsy Coderre and Paula Totten.

    JULY 14

    HOMECOMING – Buckingham Baptist Church, located at 24234 North James Madison Highway in New Canton will hold homecoming services on Sunday, July 14, beginning at 10 a.m. Glory Bound Gospel Group will perform. At 11 a.m., Pastor Richard Long will deliver the message, with lunch following in the church fellowship hall.

    HOMECOMING – Jericho Baptist Church, located at 615 Franklin Street in Farmville, will hold homecoming services on Sunday, July 11, beginning at 11 a.m. There will be a fellowship meal after the morning service, with an afternoon program at 2 p.m. Rev. Kevin Bolden, Pastor of the Oak Grove Baptist Church will deliver the message in the afternoon, with music from the New Jerusalem Mass Choir.

    HOMECOMING – Holy Trinity Baptist Church, located at 8864 S. James Madison Highway in Dillwyn, will hold homecoming on Sunday, July 14, beginning at 11 a.m. Pastor Timothy Woodson will deliver the message, with lunch served after.

    HOMECOMING – Fork Union Baptist Church, located at 5952 Dixie Hill Road in Buckingham, will hold homecoming services on Sunday, July 14, beginning at 10 a.m. Lunch will follow the morning service.

    FIRST SERMON – Mr. Troy Walker will preach his initial sermon at the Triumph Baptist Church on Sunday, July 14, beginning at 3 p.m. The church is located at 2756 Darlington Heights Road.

    SCHOOL SUPPLY GIVEAWAY – New Flame Church of God in Christ, located at 308 S. Virginia Street in Farmville, will hold a school supply giveaway on Sunday, July 14, beginning at 3 p.m. There will be free backpacks, school supplies, college dorm items and ice cream.

    JULY 15-17

    REVIVAL – Fork Union Baptist Church, located at 5952 Dixie Hill Road in Buckingham, will hold revival services July 15 to July 17, beginning at 7 p.m. Rev. Jason Holman will deliver the message Monday, with Rev. Adam Freeman preaching Tuesday and Wednesday.

    REVIVAL – Gravel Hill Baptist Church, located at 3357 Cutbanks Road in Pamplin, will hold three nights of revival, July 15 through July 17. Rev. Timothy Robertson will preach on Monday, with Rev. Leroy Woolridge Jr. on Tuesday and Rev. LaVale Jones on Wednesday.

    JULY 15-19

    VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL – Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, located at 2272 Evans Mill Road in Dillwyn, will hold Vacation Bible School from July 15 to July 19. The event will run nightly from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a theme of “Breaker Rock Beach”.

    VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL – New Flame Church of God in Christ, located at 308 S. Virginia Street in Farmville, will hold Vacation Bible School from July 15 to July 19, at 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. each night. This year’s theme is “Following Jesus is the key to living a truly sweet life.” This is for ages 4 through 12.

    JULY 15

    NAACP MEETING – The Prince Edward branch of the NAACP will meet at 6 p.m. on Monday, July 15 at the Moton Museum in Farmville.

    JULY 16

    HISTORICAL SOCIETY – The Farmville-Prince Edward Historical Society will meet on Tuesday, July 16, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Farmville Train Station. The group will learn about the construction of the Steel Viaduct at High Bridge, with more than 100 old photos on display of bridge construction.

    JULY 17-19

    REVIVAL – Jericho Baptist Church, located at 615 Franklin Street in Farmville, will hold revival services on July 17-19. Rev. Dr. Roscoe Cooper III, pastor of the Rising Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Richmond, will deliver the message. Prayer and praise will start at 6:45 p.m. nightly, with worship at 7 p.m.

    JULY 17

    YOUNG DEMOCRATS MEET – Prince Edward’s Young Democrats chapter will hold a social at Three Roads Brewery on Wednesday, July 17 from 5:15 p.m. to 6 p.m.

    REVIVAL – Holy Trinity Baptist Church, located at 8864 S. James Madison Highway in Dillwyn, will hold revival starting on Wednesday, July 17 with prayer and praise at 7 p.m. and worship at 7:30 p.m. Rev. Jeffrey Minter from Warminister Baptist Church will preach on Wednesday, Rev. Cynthia Allen from Spreading Oak Baptist Church will deliver the Thursday message, with Rev. Joseph Allen Jr. delivering the message on Friday.

    JULY 18

    CONVENTION & BAPTIST ASSOCIATION — The Cumberland Missionary and Education Convention and Cumberland Union Baptist Association will be held on July 18, beginning at 9 a.m.  That’ll take place at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, located at 1193 Cartersville Road. Lunch begins at 12:30 p.m.

    JULY 20

    CRUISE-IN – The Heart of Virginia Classic Auto Club will hold its monthly cruise-in on July 20 at the parking lot by Tractor Supply in Farmville. That will run from 5 p.m. until dusk, with a 50/50 raffle. Residents are invited to bring their classic or antique automobiles or simply stop by to have a look.

    JULY 21

    PASTOR’S AIDE DAY – Midway will celebrate their Pastor’s Aide Ministry during morning worship on Sunday, July 21. The guest minister will be Rev. Eddie Chastain and the church is located at 837 Guinea Road in Farmville.

    JULY 22 -24

    REVIVAL – Revival service will be held at Mercy Seat Baptist Church from July 22 to July 24. Prayer and praise starts at 7 p.m., with the worship service at 7:40 p.m. Guest ministers will include Rev. Daniel Oliver on Monday, July 22, with music from his choir at Pilgrim Baptist Church. On Tuesday, it’ll be Rev. Leon Jackson preaching, with music from his Zion Hill Baptist Church choir and on Wednesday, July 24, Rev. Ollie Bolden from Petersville Baptist Church will preach, with Anthony Tucker providing music.

    JULY 22 – 26

    YOUTH AND TEEN SUMMIT – New Flame Church of God in Christ, located at 308 S. Virginia Street in Farmville, will hold a Youth and Teen Summer Summit from July 22 to July 26, from noon to 8 p.m. each day. This is for ages 12 through 20. There will be day and evening sessions, bible lessons, fun activities and a sneaker gala. Lunch and dinner will be provided. Register free at https://youthteensummit.eventbrite.com.

    JULY 22

    DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE – The Prince Edward Democratic Committee will hold its regular monthly meeting on Monday, July 22 at 6 p.m. in the Extension Office, located at 100 Dominion Drive.

    JULY 28

    HOMECOMING – The High Bridge Baptist Church will hold homecoming on Sunday, July 28, beginning at 11 a.m. Lunch will be served after morning worship and the church is located at 2526 Lockett Road.

    HOMECOMING – Old Green Creek Baptist Church, located at 282 Cooks Road in Farmville, will hold homecoming services on Sunday, July 28, beginning at 11 a.m. Lunch will be served after the service.

    JULY 31 – AUG. 2

    REVIVAL – High Bridge Baptist Church, located at 2526 Lockett Road, will hold revival from July 31-Aug. 2. Prayer and praise begins at 7 p.m., with worship at 7:30 p.m. Rev. Dr. Wendy Lyle Jones will deliver the message on Wednesday, July 31, with music from the Apostolic of All Nation Choir. Rev. Michael Fowlkes will preach on Thursday, Aug. 1, with music from the High Bridge Baptist Choir. And on Friday, Aug. 2, Rev. Ernest Cleveland will speak, with music from the Reed Rock Baptist Choir.

    REVIVAL – Green Creek Baptist Church, located at 282 Cooks Road in Farmville, will hold revival services from Wednesday, July 31 through Friday, Aug. 2, at 7 p.m. nightly. Rev. Cetric Gayles, pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Cumberland, will deliver the sermon.

    AUGUST 2 -4

    PLAY PERFORMANCE – The Waterworks Players will perform the play Five Women Wearing the Same Dress by Alan Ball on Friday, Aug. 2; Saturday, Aug. 3 and Sunday, Aug. 4. The shows will run at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, with a 2 p.m. show on Sunday. Tickets are $12 each and available online at https://waterworksplayers.org/buytickets . Warning: the comedic play contains mature content.

    AUGUST 4

    FAMILY & FRIENDS DAY – Mercy Seat Baptist Church will observe Family & Friends Day on Sunday, Aug. 4, during the 11 a.m. service. Deacon David Miller, Deaconess Janeth Gardner and Sister Rose Johnson will be recognized.

    AUGUST 9-10

    HOMECOMING – New Store Baptist Church, located at 9637 Francisco Road in Farmville, will hold homecoming services on Sunday, Aug. 11, beginning at 11 a.m. The theme is “Home is Where the Heart Is,” taken from Psalm 90:1, with Pastor Irma Exantus delivering the message. Lunch will immediately follow the service.

    AUGUST 13-15

    REVIVAL – New Store Baptist Church, located at 9637 Francisco Road in Farmville, will hold revival services Aug. 13 through Aug. 15, beginning at 7 p.m. each night with a devotional service. Worship begins at 7:30 p.m. Pastor Irma Watson of Midway Baptist Church will preach on Tuesday, Aug. 13; Apostle Michael Mosely of Full Life Fellowship Ministries will deliver the message on Wednesday, Aug. 14 and Pastor Robert Waker of Forest Baptist Church will speak on Thursday, Aug. 15.
