Farmville splashpad set to reopen. Town staff answers questions

After it was shut down for two weeks, families can now head back to the Farmville splashpad. Town staff announced that the splashpad will reopen Tuesday, July 16 at 8 a.m.

“The mechanical issues have been resolved at this time,” town staff said in a statement. They also took time to address some concerns that had been shared on social media about the water used for the splashpad.

“This water comes from the town water supply, which is treated at the water treatment plant,” town staff said in a statement posted to Farmville’s social media accounts. “However, this water is recirculated through the splash pad system going through a filtering process like a pool. We have tested the water for bacteria, which was negative, and we do daily testing on the water similar to what is done for a pool. All tests show that this facility is safe to use.”

Staff members also reminded people of the rules in place when using the splashpad. You can’t drink the water, no animals are allowed and people with sore or inflamed eyes, colds, infections or cuts are asked to stay away. Also, staff point out there’s a port-a-john on site if the need arises and they ask people use that, not the splashpad.

And there’s one more issue.

“Parents, please supervise your kids,” town staff said. “Do not allow them to throw the ornamental rocks and do not allow them to climb, hang, swing or pull on any of the splashpad equipment.”

For those who might be wondering what we’re talking about here, this project has been a nearly two year journey for town officials and residents alike. Back in September 2022, the town council voted unanimously to build the splashpad, placed on the same piece of property as Lions Park, but closer to the trail. Lions Park is located on West Third Street, at the entrance to the Wilck’s Lake island area. This splashpad is approximately 5,000 square feet and was paid for using money from the town’s federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding.

As for when the splashpad is open, it’s pretty simple. The splashpad will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. all week. This runs through Labor Day and of course, those hours are subject to change in case of bad weather.
