Longwood junior left-handed pitcher Kevin Warunek was selected in the 18th round of the 2024 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft this week. He was picked up by the Philadelphia Phillies with the 552nd overall pick on Tuesday.

Warunek went 2-0 in 12 games out of the bullpen this season, posting a 2.08 ERA in 21 2/3 innings pitched with 25 strikeouts.

His longest outing came against Iona on Feb. 24 when he threw three innings, striking out four. He picked up his first win on the season against Presbyterian on March 24 going two innings while fanning four more to close the door on the Blue Hose on his way to being named Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week.

In his freshman campaign he was a weekend starter before becoming a valuable arm for the Lancers out of the bullpen his final two seasons. He pitched to a 7-4 record with a 4.97 ERA in his career with Longwood over 38 appearances and 87 innings. Warunek fanned 60 batters.

Major League teams have until Aug.1 to sign 2024 draft selections.

Buckingham resident earns Dean’s List

Officials with St. Mary’s College have announced their Dean’s List for the 2024 Spring Semester. And that group includes Buckingham County resident Kaiside Decker. To make the Dean’s List at St. Mary’s, you must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or better for 12 credits.

Heat causes problems for Society

The Farmvlle-Prince Edward Historical Society had to delay their meeting this month, due to the heat. One of the air conditioning units at the train station where they meet shut down. That event will now take place on Sept. 17.

District now taking applications

The Piedmont Soil and Water Conservation District (PSWCD) is now accepting applications for their agricultural best management practices (BMPs) cost-share program.

The cost-share program provides financial incentives, tax credits, and cost-share to agricultural producers who voluntarily install conservation practices on their farm to improve water quality. Agricultural best management practices (BMPs) are measures that farmers can take to not only improve soil and water quality but increase the productivity of their land or farming operation. Benefits include decreased erosion, increased soil organic matter, cleaner streams, and healthier animals.
