    FeatherSnap Scout Bird Feeder

There are few things more relaxing than sitting on the porch and deck and watching birds enjoy a snack at the bird feeder. But what kind of bird was that? And I wonder if different birds come at different times? It is challenge to identify every bird that lands for a meal all day long. That is where the FeatherSnap Scout Bird Feeder hopes to come in. Their bird feeder comes with a camera to help keep a record and help identify all the birds that come to visit. I had to call in the big guns to help me with this review of the FeatherSnap Smart Bird Feeder.

About the reviewer: Gardening expert Kristin

I live in an apartment so I needed to call in the big guns to help me review the FeatherSnap Scout Bird Feeder. For that, I called on my cousin Kristin who knows way more about Home and Garden than I could ever dream. She is also just an awesome person…except when it comes to squirrels stealing the bird food. Thanks to Kristin for taking over this review for me!

What Kristin liked about the FeatherSnap Scout Bird Feeder

Thanks to my awesome cousin who hooked us up with this super cool bird feeder to test. We live out in the burbs and love to garden and sit on the patio and play outside. We have had many different bird feeders over the years in our front yard and were really excited to try the FeatherSnap Scout Bird Feeder because of its camera and bird identification capabilities.

    The Camera

The camera is amazing! It shows crystal clear wide frame imaging. You can see individual feathers on the little birdies that came to visit and each strand of fir on the demon squirrel that felt the need to join the party as an uninvited guest.

The bird feeder connects to our house wifi and has a solar battery. We did initially charge the battery one time with the included charging cord before installing the feeder but have not had to recharge it since as the amazing solar feature takes care of that. It’s kind of a “set it and forget it” style which is glorious.

    Feeding system

The feeding system is super easy to fill. You do need to be able to access and take the bird feeder off the mounting system to access the back of it so you can open the top of the bird house to add food. There is a button to push and the top of the house easily flips open to reveal two receptacles for the yummies for the birdies.

The two receptacles hold a massive multi-family Thanksgiving smorgasboard amount of bird seed. It has been so nice that we haven’t been out refilling the bird seed every day. Actually, the bird seed receptacles are so fabulously large that we have only had to refill a couple times over the past few months and it would have been even less if the backyard demon squirrel had not helped himself to the birdie’s yum-yums.

The bird food comes out into a nice sized tray where many birds chose to sit in their food while other birds chose to sit on the adjustable perches.

    Design/style

The design is sleek and simple. It looks like a modern clear plastic house with a camera as the front door. It contains two retractable/adjustable perches on the front for the birdies’ comfort and so more friends can join the party. This is not a Hobby Lobby, over decorated, tchotchke kind of design. It’s very sleek and very nice.

The birdhouse as well as the mount are very sturdy and well made. The mount to attach to a wall is made of metal with a hard, strong plastic post that the bird house sits upon. The top of the birdhouse has solar panels to keep the camera battery charged. Even when placed in an area that is in shade the majority of the day, the battery stays nice and charged

    The FeatherSnap App

We did download the app but we did not purchase the subscription. You do need to download the app to complete the initial set up. Both my husband and I were able to access the app and the camera on our phones. I’m not sure if I downloaded the app correctly, but I did turn on the push notifications and yet did not ever receive an alert on my phone that we had a visitor. I doubt that is an issue with the app but more an issue with yours truly, the technologically uber lame user. But it’s worth mentioning.

    Subscription enhancements

Without the subscription, the FeatherSnap app did take pictures of our visitors but since we did not purchase the subscription, they were blurred out so we could not see them. After about a month and a half, we did start having issues getting the live feed to connect. We have not troubleshooted this ourselves yet but will. The way we were able to get pictures of our adorable little visitors and the demon squirrel was to access the live feed of the camera and then take screenshots on our phones. The live feed does not connect instantly but takes 15-30 seconds so we did miss a few friends who felt that we did not need to see them during their dinner time and flew away before the live feed connected. That being said, we got some really cool pictures.

Another super cool feature of the free app is that there is audio so we were able to clearly hear every little seed crack and bird chirp when we went on live feed.

    Available for all

The app does also give you access to their bird book without the need for a subscription. It gives pictures of tons of different birds with their names. To access any other information about the birdies like seed preferences or regional information, you do need to add a paid subscription.

    What I didn’t Like

There was a lot that I liked about the FeatherSnap bird feeder but to be thorough, here are some things that weren’t my favorite.

The main issue that we had with the bird feeder is its weight and “mountability”. It is not like an old school bird feeder that has a way to hang the system from the top. You cannot hang this bird feeder from a garden hook or from a tree branch. It comes with a sturdy mount that has to be attached to a very sturdy post or a house. We tried putting a fence post in the ground in our front yard but unless we would have poured concrete to get it to set, the bird feeder both with and without bird feed was way too heavy for the post. We ended up mounting the bird feeder to our house.

As my cousin shared, I hate squirrels (please help a sister out and fill my soul with squirrel hating joy by reading that line as Doug from the movie “Up”). They are just entitled, food stealing, line chewing furry jerks. We have used many, many bird feeders over the years in search of an effective squirrel proof bird feeder. There were a couple times where I would look out at our FeatherSnap and the neighborhood food thief squirrel would be happily sitting in the food tray of the bird feeder, stuffing his face. The FeatherSnap is not squirrel proof at all.

All in all, we have very much enjoyed the FeatherSnap bird feeder.

Wrap Up of the FeatherSnap Scout Product review

Fatman here again and I really want to thank Kristin for taking the time to test out the FeatherSnap Scout. I wish I could have done more testing but in my small downtown apartment I didn’t have anyway to get it mounted outdoors.

I think the FeatherSnap would be ideal in a location that was wooded and several species of birds that loved to frequent. It is the same concept as a trail cam. Set and forget and see what shows up! The chance to collect a huge bird book in the app looks like a really cool idea! Overall, I think this is a really innovative look at product that has been around a long time!
