A Massachusetts woman and a passenger of her vehicle were killed in a two-car crash on Wednesday in Faulkner, Maryland, according to Maryland State Police.

Police report that Norma Matthews, 81, of Lowell, Massachusetts and Virginia Licata, 86, of Blackwood, New Jersey, died as a result of the crash.

Matthews was pronounced dead at the scene, and Maryland State Police Aviation Command flew Licata to Capital Region Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Shortly before 1:45 p.m., troopers from the La Plata Barrack responded to a crash reported at Route 301 and Popes Creek Road.

A preliminary investigation shows that Matthews was driving a 2004 Toyota Camry on Popes Creek Road and was attempting to cross southbound Route 301 with Licata as a passenger. A 2017 Chevy Sonic traveling south on Route 301 crashed into the driver’s side of the Toyota.

The operator and only person in the Chevy, a 28-year-old woman from King George, Virginia, was flown by Maryland State Police helicopter to Capital Region Medical Center for treatment of injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration assisted with road closures. Police report that the roads were closed for several hours.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the investigation.

Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact Sergeant Zimmerman at 301-392-1231.
