Megunticook Golf Club in Rockport celebrates 125th anniversary with three days of events
In 1898, a six-hole golf course was laid out on borrowed land on Beauchamp Point in Rockport. It quickly became a permanent golf course when Philadelphian Charles Henry donated nearby woodland and pastureland. The club was organized specifically for golf in 1899 and opened in 1902, with a layout by groundskeeper Thomas Grant.
Grant Money to Help Fund New Ambulance
Ambulance 1 is the primary ambulance out of the Springvale Station. Congresswoman Chellie Pingree’s office contacted the Sanford FIre Department (SFD) on Aug. 7 with news that SFD has been awarded a grant through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. The grant, amounting to $422,727 according to the FEMA website, will fund 90 percent of the cost for an additional ambulance. The grant helps firefighters and other first responders obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources necessary for protecting the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards. In 2024, Maine cities and towns received 13 awards from this grant program.

City to Resume Renaming Duplicate Streets
Summer Street in Springvale will soon be renamed. The City of Sanford will resume the process of renaming streets where duplicate names exist, according to Planning and Codes Director Jamie Cole. The project began in 2022 when Sherburne Street in Sanford was renamed Tanguay Street to avoid a conflict with Sherburne Street in Springvale.

Windham converts to new system collection system Sept. 9
A big change is coming to how trash is collected in Windham, and it won’t be very long before new tote carts will be wheeling up and down driveways across town. Near the start of 2023, members of the Windham Town Council reached an agreement with Casella Waste Systems, also known as Pine Tree Waste, to convert the town to an automated trash removal system. Casella was the only refuse contractor to bid for Windham’s services and told town officials that ongoing labor issues and expenses required a conversion to a system with trash collected curbside by a driver using an automated retrieval system.
