Few people know the college basketball landscape as well as John Calipari.

The new University of Arkansas men’s coach has guided three programs to the Final Four—Kentucky, Memphis and UMass—and he’s seen the sport evolve dramatically over the past several decades.

Now, as he embarks on his fourth collegiate head coaching tenure , he’s preparing to restock a bare Razorbacks roster. But his eyes are wide open to the task at hand, evidenced by his blunt assessment of the remaining players.

“I met with the team. There is no team,” Calipari deadpanned Wednesday evening at his introductory press conference in Fayetteville, Ark.

    Wait. What?

Indeed, Calipari met with just three players: 6-foot-10 walk-on forward Lawson Blake and two unidentified players in the transfer portal, per Whole Hog Sports .

Calipari paused for reaction to his witty riff, but the assembled media apparently didn’t fully appreciate his candor. Nevertheless, myriad observers on social media understood the joke and appreciated Calipari’s self-awareness.

Here are some of the best reactions from social media.
