Monday Munchies: Mockingbird brunch and pie

Mockingbird Kitchen showed me want I want for brunch.

State of play: This Fayetteville eatery has some twists on brunch staples that are worth noting.

If you can get a shrimp cake benedict anywhere else in town, I am unaware of it. Like a crab cake but with shrimp, it's topped with a poached egg, greens and hollandaise sauce. The shrimp cakes ($22) have a nice crunch and have that bit of seafood flavor some of us want on a late Saturday morning.

The intrigue: A chicken-and-waffle combo is usually just how it sounds — a sweet and savory mix of a traditional waffle, fried chicken and syrup.

    • But at Mockingbird, the dish ($24) leans into the savory with a cornbread waffle and gravy in addition to syrup. It's certainly on the heavier side, but as long as you're hungry and prepared for the South on a plate, dig in.

What's next: I shared a slice of Mockingbird pie with three others, and the ruling was unanimous that we wanted every layer of the restaurant's take on possum pie .

    • It has a salted pecan crust, cream cheese, chocolate cream and whipped cream — all topped with candied pecans and chocolate chips.

Stop by: Brunch is served 10am-2pm weekends at 1466 N. College Ave. in Fayetteville.
