FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — The NWA Black Heritage association is hosting a free community event to be held at Walker Park on Friday, July 26, at 6 p.m.

“Community Heritage Day: Building Our Future Together” will include an educational session on the importance and benefits of creating a Black Historic District , with opportunities for attendees to ask questions and engage with project leaders.

Arkansas Tax-Free Weekend set for Aug. 3-4

The event will also feature family-friendly activities, including a Youth Bike Course & Safety Clinic provided by BIke.POC and Pedal Kids USA, delicious treats and food, and a splash pad for cooling off.

“Systemic racism often limited Black families’ access to cars, making bikes a necessity. However, this very necessity led to profiling and the false perception that Black people riding bikes were criminals,” Sharon Killian, President of NWA Black Heritage, said. “At the NWA Black Heritage Association, we’re committed to honoring this complex history. We’re working to change the narrative by making cycling a safe and accessible option for all.”
