A man shot and killed by police Tuesday was wanted in a May 12 homicide on Seneca Drive, the Fayetteville Police Department announced Wednesday.

Shakoor Quayon Williams, 33, of Fayetteville, died as a result of a gun battle with law enforcement when officers attempted to serve him with warrants charging him with first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a felon and felony conspiracy in the killing of Willie James Russell, 32, on Mother's Day, a news release Wednesday said.

Fayetteville Police Chief Kemberle Braden said Tuesday that Williams barricaded himself inside an apartment on Ivanhoe Court for more than three hours, before emerging about 1 p.m. and exchanging gunfire with three members of the department's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team. The State Bureau of Investigation said a member of the SBI's Criminal Apprehension Team was assisting and an SBI agent was also involved in the shooting.

Williams was hit and pronounced dead at the hospital, the chief said.

Braden said the State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to conduct a probe into the shooting, and his department's Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an administrative investigation. He did not release the names of the Fayetteville police officers.

The SBI said its officer has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation. The officer's name was not released.

The Fayetteville Police Department said Russell was shot early May 12 as he walked in the 2000 block of Seneca Drive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Markeith Shacol Rushing, 30, was arrested June 12 in the killing and charged with first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a felon and conspiracy.

Court records allege Rushing and Williams followed Russell in a borrowed SUV before shooting him about 5:20 a.m.
