A Florida-based real estate company announced plans last year to build a $40 million, 44-acre shopping center on Ramsey Street in Fayetteville.

Located across from Lowe's and Ollie's Bargain Outlet, Rob Tanner, owner of developer Impeccable Development told The Fayetteville Observer in October that a big-box retailer is slated to take the 147,583-square-foot anchor store at the new shopping center.

Tanner did not respond to multiple requests for comment in recent weeks.

Here's the latest on the new shopping center, which is expected to begin construction later this year and open next year.

Is the Ramsey Street shopping center still going to have a Whataburger?

While Texas-based burger chain Whataburger submitted plans to the city for a 3,305-square-foot freestanding store with a two-lane drive-thru on an outparcel of the development at 3860 Ramsey St., it appears that there has been no further movement on bringing the chain to the city.

City officials confirmed Friday that Whataburger has not resubmitted site plans since the Technical Review Committee evaluated the proposed restaurant in January.

Whataburger has not officially announced a forthcoming Fayetteville location and did not respond to multiple requests for comment regarding the proposed restaurant.

A second proposed restaurant could be a Panda Express

In mid-April, civil engineering firm Ingenium Enterprises submitted plans to the city to assess the feasibility of a 2,700-square-foot quick service freestanding restaurant with a two-lane drive-thru on a 1.3-acre outparcel at 3860 Ramsey St.

The plans do not name a restaurant, but Panda Express, Culver's and Del Taco are among Ingenium's clients, according to the company website.

The proposed restaurant matches the typical square footage and 52 interior seats listed as building requirements for a freestanding Panda Express restaurant on the company website.

Del Taco restaurants are typically about 2,000 square feet, according to the company's site requirements. Culver's locations require at least 4,500 square-foot buildings, according to the company's site requirements.

Construction began in March for a Culver's in Hope Mills, which will be the Midwest burger chain's first Cumberland County location.

What else is planned for the development?

Plans submitted to the city in late May show a Valvoline oil change station at 4024 Ramsey St., a .77-acre outparcel along the north boundary of the new shopping center.
