Weather Permitting: Here's what to expect in Fayetteville this weekend. It's not more of the same

We needed the rain, of course. But I think we could all use a nice, dry weekend in the Cape Fear region.

It looks like we'll get it.

After a week of solid soaking dropped more than 5 inches of rain in much of the region, conditions will clear in time for the weekend. Look for mild temperatures, clear skies — and, most likely, mosquitoes.

    Here's the setup

The stalled frontal boundary that has served as a trigger for rainfall has just about dissolved. We'll still see rain Thursday and Friday, but an approaching cold front will push everything offshore.

In the meantime look for another couple of days of widespread rainfall. A risk of localized flooding remains in spots when storms crawl through. Several weak energy packets are traveling along the remnants of a frontal boundary, and each will trigger showers as it passes. Temperatures in Fayetteville will be hard-pressed to top 80, with a low in the low 70s.

By Friday, the leading edge of cooler, dry air will be working into the mountains. The Cape Fear region, however, will remain warm and muggy, with temperatures reaching the mid-80s. Locally, heavy showers will crawl across the region one more time, with totals topping 2 inches in spots.

    The weekend

By Saturday midday, the showers should be gone. We'll see some lingering light rain in the region, but a drier northwest flow will drop dew points a good 10-12 degrees. After our moisture-laden stretch, it will feel like fall, even with highs in the mid-80s. Lows will drop into the upper 60s.

Sunday looks sunny, dry and just about the nicest late July day we can expect. Highs across the region will run into the upper 80s, but dew points will hold in the low 60s.

    Down the road

Look for a few more dry days, with highs climbing back toward 90. Lows in the region will drop to 70 or so. By mid-week, conditions will return to more normal late summer days with scattered showers and highs in the low 90s.

    In the tropics

All remains quiet for the time being. We're getting closer to the beginning of the Cabo Verde season when African systems begin their long trip across the Atlantic.

Some systems are already forming. We'll keep watch for any developments.

In the meantime, enjoy a dry, mild weekend!
