Changes are being made in Westover’s athletic department as one of Cumberland County's longest-tenured coaches is retiring.

Boys basketball coach George Stackhouse is retiring this season after 22 years at Westover and 33 years overall as a coach, a run that’s included multiple conference titles and a state championship in 2020 behind UNC signee D’Marco Dunn .

"After 33 years of pouring into students and student-athletes, it's time to make more time to pour into myself and my family," Stackhouse said. "I've had a truly blessed career and I'm thankful for it — thankful that God has allowed me to serve my students and student-athletes.”

In his three decades of coaching experience, Stackhouse has made a few stops along the journey. He began at Kinston High School where he was head coach, until moving to the college level to work as an assistant coach at ECU under Bill Herroin for four years until then going back to high school basketball, at Westover.

On Feb. 14, Stackhouse captured his 400th career win as a head coach in a blowout win over Overhills — a milestone that helped solidify his legacy as a legendary coach in the Fayetteville area.

"When you start off, you never really imagine any of these milestones. You mostly think about how you can pour into the kids as much as you can. I just try to get them to get the best they can be," Stackhouse said.

However, Stackhouse is not completely out the door as a coach, he says.

"I still plan on being involved with basketball in some capacity — I'm just carving out some time to try to live with more depth and do some of the things that I've had to put on the back burner for many years."

Last season, Stackhouse led the Wolverines to a 29-2 overall record and swept the All American Conference with both regular-season and conference tournament titles before falling in the NCHSAA 3A East Regional finals to Seventy-First.
