FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (WVNS) — The Fayette County Humane Society will hold an adoption event due to their Code Red status.

The adoption event will run for two weeks, from Friday, June 14, 2024 through Friday, June 28, 2024. The adoption fees for all dogs at the shelter are sponsored, and while cats are not included in the sponsored adoptions they do have a special adoption fee.

Details about the adoption event include:

    • Adopters will be required to have a pre-approved adoption application before they can adopt a pet.
    • All of the adoptions will include flea and tick prevention, vaccines, a spay and neuter voucher, and dewormer, with the rabies vaccine included at the time of the spay and neuter surgery. There will be no hidden fees for the adopter, as the spay and neuter surgery cost will be covered by the humane society.
    • Cats are not included as a part of the adoption event, however they will have a special adoption fee of $40, and the adoptions will also include a spay and neuter voucher, dewormer, flea and tick prevention, and vaccines.
    • Those who cannot adopt can foster and/or take part in the Fayette County Humane Society’s ‘Dog Day Out Program.’
    • The Fayette County Humane Society is a NO KILL shelter, and they do not euthanize for space. Dogs that do not get adopted stay at the shelter until they find a ‘fur-ever’ home.
    • The Fayette County Humane Society does out-of-county as well as out-of-state adoptions.

As of Friday, June 14, 2024, the Fayette County Humane Society is overcapacity with almost 100 dogs, and the shelter is only meant to hold 65 dogs.

According to a post on the shelter’s Facebook page, the shelter has been in Code Red for almost a year, meaning that they cannot help the community with owner surrenders or the Fayette County Animal Control with neglected, abused, and abandoned dogs.

The Fayette County Humane Society, located at 513 Shelter Road, Fayetteville, WV 25840, is open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and can be contacted by phone at 304-574-2722 or by messaging their Facebook page.
