A news release said that for the past 30 years, the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh College of Nursing and the College of Nursing Board of Visitors has held the event to honor those who embody the spirit of Florence Nightingale and demonstrate excellence in nursing.
Schroeder was presented with a Nursing Excellence Award, described as going “above and beyond” in every aspect of her care.”
Patients and their families have expressed their gratitude, recounting instances where Schroeder's quick response and genuine concern made a significant impact, according to the release.
Schroeder has more than 25 years of nursing experience and specializes in surgery/oncology. She has had multiple DAISY Award nominations as well as compliments from patients for her care. She also serves on committees to help improve patient care and nurse well-being.
Award recipients receive a scholarship and an award symbolizing the spirit of Florence Nightingale.
Six other SSM Health nurses were nominated: Sidney Aalsma, surgery, SSM Health Ripon Community Hospital; Vanessa Arellano, diabetes services, endocrinology, ID Services, SSM Health St. Agnes Hospital; Melissa Bresser, family birth suites, SSM Health Waupun Memorial Hospital; Hannah Malson, SSM Health Ripon Community Hospital; Karmen Voigt, emergency department, SSM Health Ripon Community Hospital; and Leandra Waldschmidt, Hemodialysis FDL, SSM Health St. Agnes Hospital.

Physical therapy assistant honored with BEE Award for service
Erin Doyle has received the BEE (Be Exceptional Everyday) Award. She is an SSM Health Therapy Services physical therapy assistant at Health Plaza A.
According to a news release, Doyle was nominated for the extra attention she gave a patient who was found waiting in the entryway as the clinic was preparing to close for the evening. After learning the patient’s transportation did not arrive, she called a cab service and paid for it with her own money.
The nomination stated: “As the nurse of this patient, I am so blessed to have people like Erin who are compassionate and caring for others. Erin always has a smile and is willing to lend a helping hand.”
The BEE Award recognizes non-nursing staff who demonstrate teamwork and communication skills, collaboration, professionalism, exemplary service and a commitment to excellence.
SSM Health nurse, Haley Birschback, cited for compassion, care
Haley Birschbach, a nurse in medical oncology and hematology at SSM Health Fond du Lac Regional Clinic, has been named a DAISY Award winner.
Nurses may be nominated by patients, families and colleagues. Awards are presented to one recipient on a quarterly basis.
Birschbach was nominated by a patient family member who wrote, in part: “My husband received care for pancreatic cancer for more than two years. ... But there was one very special RN that really touched his heart and who went above and beyond to provide him the care and support he needed. When he made the very painful decision to stop treatment, Haley organized a visit to our home on a Sunday afternoon in December. She along with three other RNs and Matt the pharmacist came to our home to visit with him and say goodbye. That afternoon was one of the most beautiful things I have ever experienced. It truly meant the world to him and helped to give him peace.”
Honorees receive a DAISY Award pin, and a sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe.
The DAISY Foundation is a not-for-profit organization, established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes by members of his family. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired the award.

Thrasher holds party to announce its new season
Thrasher Opera House will hold a Season Release Party from 5 to 7:30 p.m. May 23 at 506 Mill St., Green Lake.
The event will feature food vendors, a full bar, live music by Stella Prince, a history of Thrasher, the summer/fall lineup prizes and more.
“We are thrilled to share with our fans the upcoming Summer/Fall season for Thrasher at the Season Release Party,” Thrasher Opera House Executive Director Rachael Avery said in a news release. “We feel that the upcoming season is filled with something everyone will enjoy.”

Ripon library continues working on master plan for improvements
The Ripon Public Library has found support from the community for its renovation project, “Thinking Outside The Books.” Renovations will improve the library campus inside and out.
Because of the age of the building, maintenance issues must be prioritized, causing a delay in fundraising efforts.
The library also is investigating and applying for grants that will help with the costs of both the renovation and maintenance improvements.
Library staff and trustees alike are working toward a facilities master plan.
