Julia Horger is PIAA state champ in girls wrestling
Almost a decade ago, at Apache Wrestling in Trevose, the beginnings of a future wrestling success story were starting to be told. On the sidelines, 7-year-old Julia Horger could usually be found coloring as her cousin Eric and the other boys practiced. Despite appearing to be immersed in her art, Horger was absorbing all aspects of the sport and, simultaneously, falling in love with it. That’s why, when Eric found himself without a partner one week, she jumped at the opportunity to fill in.
Saturday Slam Down Showdown is April 13

March is ALICE Awareness Month
The County of Bucks, United Way of Bucks County and Penn Community Bank recently united to designate March as ALICE Awareness Month. ALICE, an acronym that stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, represents the 27 percent of Bucks County individuals and families who earn above the federal poverty level but still struggle to make ends meet.

St. Mary commissions mural in celebration of 50th anniversary
St. Mary Medical Center announced plans to install a mural at Saint Andrew Catholic School in Newtown. The mural, which will honor community partnership, was designed by local artist Jessica Jackson and will be revealed during a celebratory event at the school in early April. The project caps off a year-long celebration of St. Mary Medical Center’s 50th anniversary.
Sunshine Foundation announces new national board member
The Southampton-based Sunshine Foundation announced that Mary Kleva-Chelednik joined its national board of directors. Kleva-Chelednik, director of the Atlantic Cape Pediatrics office for Bayada Home Health Care in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, started her career at Bayada over 25 years ago as a client services manager. Throughout her tenure, she has worn many hats, overseeing recruiting, compliance, marketing and multiple program developments.

‘Big: The Musical’ celebrates opening night at Bristol Riverside March 21
Charles Osborne doesn’t have to worry about getting his cardio in whenever he’s on the Bristol Riverside Theatre stage. In fall 2023, he starred in The Mystery of Irma Vep, a two-person marathon of a show that required dozens of costume changes, many of which had to be completed in only 5 seconds. Now, Osborne is getting his heartrate up again at the theater, this time as adult Josh Baskin in Big: The Musical, a dance-heavy stage adaptation of the 1988 hit film Big starring Tom Hanks. Directed by Ken Kaissar, the show runs from March 19 to April 14, with opening night scheduled for March 21.

On Wednesday, Feb. 28, at about 3 p.m., Bensalem Police were investigating a report of suspicious activity near the 3600 block of Street Road. As officers attempted to contact the suspect, he fled in his vehicle at a high rate of speed and struck two police vehicles. The suspect was operating a white-in-color Mercedes SUV, which was later recovered, unoccupied, in the area of W. Highland Avenue and Hulmeville Avenue in Langhorne Manor. Officers from multiple jurisdictions established a perimeter and a search was conducted utilizing K9s with negative results. The suspect has been identified as Elovens Joseph, 33, of Trenton, New Jersey.
Bensalem Township appoints first-ever career fire chief
For the first time in its history, Bensalem Township appointed a career fire chief. Last Monday afternoon, Mark Antozzeski was sworn in by Mayor Joe DiGirolamo and, that evening, made an appearance at the Bensalem Council meeting to officially greet the public. Antozzeski will oversee the paid Bensalem Fire Rescue, as well as the township’s six volunteer fire departments: Eddington, Cornwells, Nottingham, Newport, Union and Trevose.
