Newsom presses Oakland to change strict policy on police chases
Gov. Gavin Newsom sent a letter to Oakland leaders on Friday, urging them to re-evaluate restrictions on police pursuits. First obtained by the San Francisco Chronicle, the letter was addressed to Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, the city council, and the police commission.
Suspects arrested in San Jose armed robbery of person selling items online
Three suspects were arrested in the April armed robbery of a victim in San Jose who had been selling merchandise online, police said.The robbery happened on April 29 on the 800 block of Gateview Drive. San Jose police said the victim was completing an online marketplace sale with an unknown male suspect. During the interaction, two other armed suspects approached him and robbed him of over $4,000 dollars worth of merchandise, police said. The suspects fled in a vehicle.The investigation determined the suspects as two adult males and a 17-year-old male. The adult suspects were identified as San Jose residents Laquin Golden, 22, and Dwight Porsche, 19. Police obtained arrest and search warrants and on July 17, undercover officers arrested Golden and the teenage suspect in San Jose and arrested Porsche in Milpitas. Golden and Porsche were booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for robbery while the teenage suspect was booked into Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall for robbery. Brian Gilbert, 56, of San Jose, was the last in a ring of seven former eBay employees to see sentencing for cyberstalking. The group targeted a Massachusetts couple that published a newsletter critical of the company.

A retired San Jose engineer was sentenced to 15 years in prison for shooting an unarmed 21-year-old student who was walking to a store to get snacks in 2022. Mark Henry Waters, 68, shot the man while he was trying to run away, shattering his femur in several places, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office.
Ohio man arrested in Cedar City for allegedly kidnapping a California girl
CEDAR CITY — An Ohio man was found Wednesday at a Cedar City gas station with a California teen who had been reported kidnapped. Ryan Gray Patch, 27, of Ohio, was booked into the Iron County Jail on suspicion of felony charges of aggravated kidnapping, endangerment of a child, and misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana/spice and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the police affidavit.
Cal Poly Humboldt Artist Wins 2024 California Duck Stamp Contest
A painting by Cynthia Fisher of Hamilton, Montana has been chosen as the winner of the 2024 California Duck Stamp Contest. “I learned to love waterfowl during my years in college at Cal Poly Humboldt,” said artist Fisher.” “I spent all my times studying ducks and other birds, doing taxidermy, and went on the first of many Duck hunts after that,” said artist Fisher. Judges first noted the position and orientation of the mallards in Fisher’s painting, describing the ducks in flight as an action shot. The painting reflected the background as Sutter Buttes, a small mountain village near Yuba City in Sutter County. Artist Fisher’s Blue Ribbon winner and three runners up will be on display at the Pacific Flyway Decoy Association Annual Wildlife Art Festival in Sacramento.
