FENNVILLE – A familiar face has returned to take over as Fennville High School Athletic Director.

Tony Stennett has begun his role with the Blackhawks, taking over for Wendell Hughes, who stepped down.

“I want to thank Dr. (Doug) Greer and the rest of the hiring committee for the opportunity to serve our students, the school and the community of Fennville,” said Stennett. “I am thrilled to be back at the place which made such an impact on me as a person, a student, and an athlete. There is a tradition of excellence here, and we are going to work tirelessly to live up to that standard.”

Stennett, a 2009 graduate of Fennville, makes his way back into familiar walls after several years working at the collegiate level in various roles.

Most recently, he was the assistant men’s basketball coach at Wayland Baptist University, an NAIA school located in Texas.

While at WBU, he helped the Pioneers to 46 wins, back-to-back national tournament appearances, and being ranked as high as 10th in the NAIA Coaches Poll. During his time with the Pioneers, they had their longest winning streak since 1991. They had nine All-SAC award winners, an NAIA All-American, and three players sign with agents or contracts to play overseas. In the classroom, the team boasted a GPA that was over 3.0 each semester.

Stennett also had stops coaching at Lamar Community College (Colo.), Kansas Wesleyan University, and at Bethany College (Kan.). In addition to coaching, Stennett worked as the Coordinator of Athletic Communication at Bethany, and he was also the Assistant Director of Student Development his last two years at Kansas Wesleyan.

“We are so fortunate to have Coach Stennett join our Fennville administration team. He has a passion for students and helping them thrive both in the arena and in the classroom,” said Greer, Fennville Public Schools Superintendent. “As an experienced coach, he will also be able to support our coaches in growing professionally so that our athletic teams can reach their full potential, not only on the score board, but more importantly, as ambassadors of Fennville Public Schools.”
