A Landmark Restaurant in Ferndale is Exploring Redevelopment Possibilities

Rosie O’Grady’s closed abruptly in 2021, citing staff shortages . The building has since remained closed for the past three years. It appears that the owner and operator of Rosie O’Grady’s, who also owns the entire lot the building sits on, has not given up on redevelopment. Brian Kramer , proprietor of Hometown Restaurant Group , formerly known as Kramer Restaurant Group , hopes to convert the building into a new concept called Atlantic and Pacific . Rosie O’Grady’s at 279 W Nine Mile Rd sits on a 15,000-square-foot lot owned by Kramer. The current zoning condition requires the addition of a second-story to the existing building before any other development can be approved.

In the C&G story, Kramer explained that building out a second story is unrealistic, citing the overall economic environment and the cost of adding an upper floor. However, some upcoming changes to Ferndale’s zoning codes may bring positive changes to the project as the city commission explores more liberation within the zoning ordinances.

City Manager Joe Gacioch told C&G that upcoming changes to the zoning ordinance “look to simplify things for downtown development.” These changes will go through Ferndale’s Planning Commission for further discussion.
