Massachusetts Hunter Bags First Confirmed Leucistic Black Duck
Last December, Mike Wec was hunting a pond in Massachusetts when he bagged an incredibly rare leucistic black duck with his first shot of the day. In the low light conditions, Wec initially thought the duck he’d killed was a hen mallard based on its flight pattern and silhouette. When he retrieved it and saw the varying shades of blonde feathers, he knew he’d shot something special—but still wasn’t sure of the species.
Brown Trout 101: Biology, Habitat, and Fishing Tactics
If you think about fly fishing or river fishing in general, chances are that a brown trout comes to mind. Catching a big brown is the pinnacle for many trout anglers, whether fishing with fly gear or conventional tackle. Of course, a brown trout’s size is relative to where and when you fish. Even small browns have a way of getting anglers excited to hit the water, especially when they’re colored up. These predatory fish can be found in freestone creeks, big rivers, and large lakes. The widespread accessibility of the species and their hard-fighting nature make them one of the best freshwater gamefish.
How to Fish the Best Day of the Bass Spawn No. 6: May 23
This Thursday, May 23rd, is the next pick in our Best Days of the Bass Spawn series. Though some anglers in the South might find it hard to believe, the bass spawn is still far from over for a large portion of the country. Yes, the southerly states where I live have seen the bass spawn come and go, and hot weather and hot water are quickly setting in. But things are just getting right north of the Mason-Dixon line—considerably north that is.

Alabama Teen Catches a Pending State-Record Snook After Getting His Lure Stuck in a Tree
High school junior Gardner Love turned a bad cast into a great catch when he boated a pending Alabama state-record common snook while dislodging his lure from a tree during a solo fishing outing on May 14. “The wind was blowing towards land, and I got snagged up in a...
F&S Classics: Bo Whoop Comes Home
The mallards catch us at midmorning, when our guts are growling and our guard is down. Typical of late-season ducks, the pair is within gun range before anyone notices them. Someone in the blind hisses “ducks” with the urgent tone that voids all gentlemen’s rules of calling the shot. I grab and shoulder the gun leaning up next to me. It’s not your typical duck gun. It’s a big double, a 90-year-old HE-grade Super Fox with stamped barrels. The right one reads MADE FOR NASH BUCKINGHAM; the left, BY BURT BECKER PHILA, PA. I pull the front trigger, and the gun’s report ripples through the green cypress and button willows. From here, it sounds like any other 12-gauge. But the guys at camp a quarter mile away later say they heard something different—a distinct, two-note report that they swear sounds just like it does in the legends: bo-whoop.

Canadian Hunter Airlifted After Killing Charging Grizzly
A 36-year-old Canadian hunter who was tracking black bears with dogs was airlifted to a hospital on May 16 after a grizzly bear attacked him near Elkford, British Columbia. The Sparwood resident was hunting with his father around 3 p.m. on a steep hillside when he was “attacked suddenly by an adult grizzly bear,” according to a press release from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). “The man was able to defend himself with his firearm and the bear ran off,” the release said, but the hunter “suffered numerous injuries, including broken bones and lacerations to his body during the attack.” He was in stable condition during the evacuation.

Update: Introduced Gray Wolf Found Dead in Colorado Likely Killed by Mountain Lion
A gray wolf found dead in Colorado on April 18 was killed by a mountain lion, according to necropsy results announced this week by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The wolf was one of 10 released in Grand and Summit counties last December as part of a reintroduction plan approved by Colorado voters in 2020. The animal was found dead in Larimer County and collected by the USFWS, which conducted the necropsy. In a May 14 statement, USFWS spokesman Joe Szuszwalak said the wolf likely died as a result of trauma from predation. “Although not definitive, the puncture wounds in the skull are consistent with those typically inflicted by a mountain lion,” Szuszwalak noted.

New Study: Canada’s “Super Pig” Invasion Likely to Spread into Northern U.S.
Canada’s wild pig problem may soon spread. According to a recent study published in the journal Biological Invasions, Canada’s invasive swine has a “high potential” for moving south across the border into the mostly wild pig-free states of South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, and Minnesota. The...
Inboard vs Outboard Engines: Which is Better for Hunting and Fishing
In my opinion, boats are like bird dogs. It’s better to have a friend with one than own one yourself. But if you’re not like me and you want to buy a boat, you’re probably weighing engine options—specifically, the differences between inboard vs outboard engines. Picking...

So when we heard that Benchmade was launching its new Water Series collection, we knew we had to try them out. And to no one’s surprise, they didn’t disappoint.
How to Fish a Neko Rig for Bass
Of all the finesse presentations that have emerged over the last decade, the neko rig is the unsung hero. It isn’t the prettiest or flashiest, and it’s not even the best producer of big bites. But, in the right situation, it is an extremely effective rig for catching bass—and one anglers should have in their tackle box.
Don’t Call Them Snakeheads in Maryland. They Are Now Chesapeake Channas
Maryland legislators hoping to control Northern snakehead numbers by encouraging more people to eat the invasive fish have succeeded in slapping a new menu-and-cookbook-friendly label on the toothy predator: Chesapeake Channa. Maryland Senator Jack Bailey and co-sponsor J.B. Jennings introduced Senate Bill 207, “Natural Resources — Northern Snakehead — Common...
Sneak Preview! See the First Cover of the New Field & Stream Journal
We’ve been waiting to share this with you for months now: You’re looking at the first cover of the brand-new Field & Stream journal! Our goal with this cover was simple: Create a modern classic. The “classic” half began with drawing inspiration from our cover archives—specifically, the April 1938 cover of a lone fly angler wet-wading a stream for native brook trout. Next, we enlisted the talents of wildlife artist Ryan Kirby to bring the original artwork to life for the modern version shown here.
The Cicada Report: How to Tie a Project Cicada
The highly anticipated cicada hatch is underway in southern parts of the country, and anglers should start seeing fish of all species come to the surface to feed on these big bugs. CJ Alexander Faces 23 Charges for Poaching Trophy Buck
Last fall, Ohioan Christopher “CJ” Alexander shot a giant whitetail buck in Ohio. The deer, which could have gone down as the biggest typical buck ever shot in Ohio and the third-biggest typical in North America, quickly drew attention from the hunting community. But soon after shooting the deer, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (DNR) seized it, announcing that the buck may not have been taken where Alexander said it was.
