Watch Two Massive Brown Bears Brawl in British Columbia
Don’t mess with an angry brown bear. If you have any doubt about the ferocity of these bruins, this video will squash it. In late May, wildlife photographer Derek Yoder captured footage of two giant brown bears squaring off in British Columbia. The video shows a brown bear boar...
Watch a Tiny Chihuahua Stand Down a Moose in Alaska
This chihuahua may be small, but it’s pretty damned fearless. In late May, a TikTok user in Alaska posted a video showing her purse-sized dog barking at a cow moose in the street. “And, of course, it’s the 6-pound chihuahua that’s making poor choices,” the dog’s owner wrote in the video description.
How to Fish a Mayfly Hatch for Bass
Targeting bass during a mayfly hatch is a great way to generate big bites in the summer months. Starting in May and running through September, mayflies emerge all across North America. Usually associated with trout and fly fishing, mayfly hatches are also great for targeting bass. These bugs draw in largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass that feed on the flies themselves, as well as other smaller fish eating the bugs.
Welcome to Opening Day of the New F&S Print Journal!
Back in late January, when I shared the good news that Field & Stream was reviving the print publication, I compared the occasion to the excitement and anticipation that we hunters and anglers experience on an opening day. Five months later, that comparison feels even more on point. Because today—finally, after nearly four years since the last issue of F&S appeared in mailboxes—thousands of readers across the country are opening their copy of the all-new Field & Stream journal.

Brook Trout: A Complete Guide to America’s Native Char
Brook trout, or brookies as they are commonly referred to, are synonymous with the Northeast and small mountain streams. While technically a char, the species is almost always grouped together with rainbow and brown trout. Historically, they are the predominant trout/char species in the Northeast part of the country. However, once rainbows and browns were introduced, the dynamics of many Northeast trout fisheries changed.
State of the Wild Turkey 2024: An Interview with Dr. Mike Chamberlain
Last year, we sat down with Drs. Mike Chamberlain and Patrick H. Wightman at the annual NWTF National Convention with some pressing questions about wild turkeys: Were bird numbers still declining? Did bag limits need to change? Was reaping impacting turkey population? A full year and another spring gobbler season have passed since that interview, and because the situation around these birds is always changing, we wanted to bring Dr. Chamberlain, widely known as the Turkey Doctor, back for an update on the state of the wild turkey. Chamberlain was just coming off of his hunting season with fresh observations on where turkeys have been and where they’re headed. Here is our Q&A, including his overall outlook for 2024 and beyond.
I Got to Test Out the New Polaris Ranger—And It’s the Best I’ve Ever Driven
We may earn revenue from the products available on this page and participate in affiliate programs. Learn more ›. I was driving a 2025 Polaris Ranger XP 1000 when I had to slow down, not for a rock or other typical obstacle, but because there was an ostrich on the road. The nearly 6-foot bird slowed our train of UTVs to a crawl as it followed the road for over 100 yards. Finally, the big bird cut off the trail, disappearing into the dense brush as quickly as it had appeared. The whole sequence would have been unusual if I didn’t already know I was in Texas.
Florida Woman Gets Video of 5-Foot Monitor Lizard: “Holy Crap, That’s Not a Gator!”
As if Burmese pythons, green iguanas, cane toads, and walking catfish aren’t bad enough, Floridians are dealing with yet another invasive species after a video surfaced on May 20 of a 5-foot-long monitor lizard crossing a road in Charlotte County. Renee Aland spotted what she first thought was an...
We Spent Weeks in the Woods Testing Insect-Repellent Clothing—Here’s What Actually Works
We may earn revenue from the products available on this page and participate in affiliate programs. Learn more ›. Warmer weather seems to stir up an internal primal desire for outdoor adventure. Unfortunately, it also stirs up swarms of insects, and let’s face it, large numbers of those bugs totally suck, both literally and figuratively. Multi-legged critters like ticks, chiggers, mosquitoes, and biting flies leave itchy bites, buzz menacingly in your ears, spread potentially dangerous diseases, and are just plain gross.

Texas Angler Catches Extremely Rare All-Black Gar
Jerry Threet was fishing the Austin Bayou in southeast Texas on May 18 when he made an unexpected catch: a black gar. That morning, Threet had already caught a 5-foot alligator gar. The second fish that bit was something special. “I set the hook, the gar jumped out of the...

I hunted about 30 days, starting in Texas in late March, bouncing back and forth between Kentucky and Tennessee all of April, and finishing up in Nebraska in early May. As is the case every turkey season, this one had its moments of jubilation and disappointment, with plenty of lessons learned and takeaways along the way. These are the ones that stood out.
